CC Identity Verification Question

Hello, I recently applied over the phone for a Chase BP Visa card.  I was given an application status phone number which has told me it's under review.

However, I received a letter in the mail yesterday, supposedly from Chase, wanting to verify I am who I say I am.  They are asking for a copy of my social security card and a copy of a utility bill.  Is this normal for a credit application?

I'm a little concerned because my name was also misspelled on the letter I received but I do have a somewhat unusual name and the rep I spoke to on the phone was not from the US so he may not have understood my name spelling?

Should I be leary of this request from Chase?

Sounds like maybe you typed your name incorrectly and that they might be asking for this verification because it doesn't match your CRA.  If you think it might not be Chase I would go to their website and then find a customer service # and not call the # on the letter to confirm they sent it.

Most likely it's legit

Re: CC Identity Verification Question

I received the same form from Chase. Since your name is wrong, you should call them to make sure it won't be spelled incorrectly on your card, if and when you get it.

But yes, I agree with Minnesota. If you're at all uncomfortable, call them to verify.

Just pointed out some things that really caught my attention. First you applied over the phone, don't they usually ask a lot of question for verification purposes. If for any reason you don't think that its really chase you should call the number from their web site; however it is a little questionable that the CSR didn't ask how to spell your name to make sure it will be correct on your new card!

Re: CC Identity Verification Question

I would call them back and ask, and if need be, fax them the required documents.

This happened to me earlier this year with Chase.  I called the number on the letter to make sure it was legit.  It was and since I didn't have a utility bill in my name, they let me fax in the first page from my bank statement.  Couple days later, I got my CC.
