Update: I apped for the Garden Savings Credit Union VISA card, with FICO 8 scores of 803 (EQ), 787 (TU), and 788 (EX). Was rather surprised to be flat-out denied, and also denied again upon requesting a recon Ah, well...would have really liked to have had a chance to have had this card, but even without it, still in pretty good shape in terms of my current card collection which presently has 4 cards with fixed interest rates below 10%...

What reasons did they cite for the denial?

They said that I would receive the reasons for the denial by postal mail, and refused to elaborate beyond that or in more detail -- when I receive the letter in the mail, I will be sure to update everyone, thanks.
CU's like to be the first ones in you wallet before you hit 100K in CL's. My guess is the notorious "YOU HAVE TOO MUCH CREDIT" excuse.

Sounds like a generalized statement. But, not IME, plus I'm sure other folks fall into the same camp. Mix and match based on what works for individuals.
It really depends on the CU, footfrint/geo-restrictions, membership size, lending policies, etc. I'd say First Tech, SDFCU, Achieva, PSECU, GTE may not be as willing or generous based on their conservative UW policies, for instance. But, DCU, NASA, NFCU, UNFCU, PenFed, Alliant, Andrews, RBFCU, Langley and a plethora of others don't seem to mind lending beyond the scope of folks having aggregate or TCLs > $100K.
That’s a bummer that you were denied. Sorry to hear that.
