CSP without SUB

I have some travel coming up and the CSP car rental and airline protections would be great to have. I recently got the Amex Gold and I'm going for that SUB. I'm pretty sure that I can't hit both SUBs, so I'm not even going to try for the CSP's. Does anyone have experience with getting the CSP and not hitting the minimum spend for whatever reason, then downgrading it after the 1st year and immediatly reapplying for it to get the SUB the 2nd time around?
Obviously 5/24 will be an issue, but other than that is Chase going to frown on this plan?

Re: CSP without SUB

If you can't make the spend, don't app the card. The CSP and CSR are hard enough to get, what with 5/24 and the 48-month SUB wait.

If you want car rental protection, pay the nominal fee to AMEX for that coverage, same with trip protection.

The UR bonus of 60,000 is worth a lot more than the few dollars you will pay AMEX for these short term protections.

Re: CSP without SUB

If you can't hit the SUB on the CSP, I wouldn't apply for it yet. Amex does have Premium Car Rental Insurance that is primary insurance for $12.95 to $24.95 per rental (up to 42 consecutive days) depending on which state you live in. The Gold Card will have trip delay insurance starting Jan. 1st.

Re: CSP without SUB

My situation was sort of similar..

I was approved for both AMEX Gold and CSP one month apart. Tried to hit both SUBs, mainly by paying for a vacation trip that was coming up fast. Hit the AMEX SUB easily, missed the CSP SUB (just needed an extra month!). I only put moderate-spend on the card during the year. Instead of downgrading when the AF hit, I consolidated the CL with my Amazon card, then closed it.

In my case, given my history with their Amazon Prime card, and good-standing with the CSP, I would hope Chase would offer me a SUB for applying for the CSR next.

+1 for this!

AMEX's Car Rental Insurance that will be just about the same coverage could cost you at most 40$ish for your trip (<40ish days I believe) vs the SUB of $750 if you book through UR portal. Absolutlely wait until you can make the spend. Who knows if Chase will come out with different rules precluding you from getting a SUB on a 2nd round at some point.
