Here's your reason for gardening. People often acquire two or three cards, then they can't figure out a way to meet the sign-up bonus. Or worse, they overspend after "inventing" ways to meet sign-up bonuses. You're doing it the right way. Let your natural spending take care of it, keeping in mind that it's fine to temporarily shift spending from other cards to the new one.
The main thing to watch for with Capital One applications is new accounts and inquiries. They've become much more sensitive to those things over the past year or so.
