That's is called payment in limbo and is correct. It is treated like an additional payment in the past billing cycle.
In the future never make payments on the statement dates
OP you need to refer to the Payment Due date on a statement. Any payments after that date are technically late and may be subject to late fees. They are not immediately 30 days late, but get in the habit of ensuring the cards are all paid at least the minimum, by the payment due date. The statement date can also shift, different day of the month, month to month.
The banks are all processing millions of credit card statements throughout the month, and processing is done in batches that take time to complete. Do not expect instant response either when you charge a cost, nor when you pay the card bill.

In addition to what was mentioned above, were you attempting to make an extra payment for the last billing cycle or more or less doing it early so it would count for the new or current cycle?
BTW, there is a disclaimer whenever you submit your payment which outlines the posting/cut off times depending on when you submit the payment plus the 14th was a Sunday.
In my experience, whenever I make a payment during the "limbo" period from "due date" up to and including "statement date" Capital One always gives a screen prior to submission stating that the payment I am making will be not satisfy the upcoming payment due and will be applied to the previous statement balance. It is then up to me to decide if I want to complete the payment or cancel it until the statement posts.
Lots of folk in this forum have odd payment practices. I keep saying, make your payments no sooner than a day or two after the statement cuts and no later than a day or two before the due date (which is usually two days before the next statement date).
I just had this happen on my Paypal Credit account...made a payment after the statement cut only to find out later that it didn't apply to my minimum payment amount and I would have to make another payment.
