I used to have 3 capital one cards back in 2014 when they used to allow you to merge accounts. A year ago I decided to close my old platinum card that was charging me a monthly fee, and now I am left with the capital one quicksilver card. I applied for a new card and one of the statements for denial stated I had too many capital one cards even though I was down to one card. So I am not sure if there is a time limit that your previous account has to be closed to be able to attain a new card, I just know I was unsuccessful in trying to get a Savor card.
I called about a business card last week and was told you are allowed to have 5 of them.
If I recall correctly that was total pesonal/business accounts.
I have 3; one was openned in 2018 and 2 in 2019. I have a Venture One, Quiksilver, and a UnionPlus Card with my union Logo. I was surprised when I received the union pre-approved form and it came from Capital One. I do not even see it on their list of products. I would have never gotten a 3rd Capital One card if it was not for that card. But yes, it's a dark grey mastercard with my union logo in the middle.
I have 3 cards in total, a Savor card, a Walmart store card, and a Williams-Sonoma Visa. I know two are co-branded, but that is 3. Also I have preapprovals for a Quicksilver and Venture X card, which I'm not taking yet.

I have two QuickSilver cards, very old upgrades from that are clearly bucketed. I also get the notication I have too many cards, and plan to ditch the lowest limit and newest QS card simply because it is worthless, I have far better cards with more than 10x that limit. Capital One has annoyed me so much with the bucketing, not sure I'd apply for any of their cards except Venture X - and won't be doing that any time soon.
I called Cap1 some months ago and was told I had to cancel a card to apply for another.
The 2 Card Rule is False.
I just got approved for another Savor1-$500. I applied just to see if I could get another Savor1. I have another Savor1-$3000 & a Venture1-$4000. Ficos in the 620's.
Never burned Cap1.

It's not false. There are a few documented instances of people being allowed a 3rd card. But for the most part, the 2 card rule seems pretty consistent.
Thats odd although going straight for the Savor isnt an easy approval from a Plat open or closed. The denial reasons dont always match. Did you try the pre-qual first?

Yes I pre-qualified for quicksilver and the savor only.
I have 2 QS cards. One with a limit of $3.5K and the other with a limit of $5.5K. I called them and requested that I just have one card with a $9K limit and was told that wasn't possible. I would have to request a CLI on one of them to get up to the limit I want and then close the other card. Truly not logical, but it is what it is....gonna sock drawer them.
