Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

My second statement was just cut yesterday (to which I promptly paid it in full -- though the payment's posted to my account, the funds are still on hold). I was wondering when ya'll would suggest that I call and ask for a CLI?

My current CL is $300 and I would LOVE to have it higher!! As it is right now, there's not alot of use I can get out of it since the CL's so low ... I've paid in full twice (maybe 3 times -- not sure) ...

I know that CCCs are CLDing right now, but since I'm already at the lowest CL possible for this tier card, I figure what's the worst they can do? But mainly, I want to ask when I'm more likely to GET the CLI!

Any advice, suggestions, etc, MUCH appreciated!! Thank you!!!

Also forgot to ask: I've heard LOTS of talk of "luv buttons" -- does Cap One have one of those? If so, where would it be??

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

you could wait at least 3 - 6 months if you want to play it safe or just call now and say 'hi, good day.  can you please check and let me know if this account is currently eligible for a cli?'  and see what the response is.  they may say it's too early but they are not amex and if the cl is 300 -one of their lowest already and you are a pifer anyway they don't have much room to AA you, except to close the account and lose a good pif customer. that would be like shooting themself in the foot really.  i seriously doubt this approach will harm you in any meaningful way and may get you an increase!  simple as pie Smiley Tongue

i can tell you that i've requested cli's on my cap1 a couple of times already this year (most recently three weeks ago) w/o retribution.  of course i didn't get an increase on my frozen at 500 limit card, but whatevs.  as far as i'm concerned i wouldn't bat an eyelash if they wanted to close the acct. anyway.  i am very grateful that it has helped me but outgrown it long ago and think the way they handle their starter cards is overly and unecessarily burdensome to the consumer.  why not reward good behaviour like most other issuers instead of setting up more hoops to jump through w/ reapping and combining to get an increase.

They do not have a button.

My credit steps increase was the last one I received back on April 22. When I requested another increase (July), I received a denial letter stating that 6 months had not passed since the last time one was granted. I suppose if I wanted to bug them on the 22nd for an increase I could, but I haven't used it much.

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

My Cap1 cards will allow you one positive change every 6 months. When I started, my requests were for lower interest rates (I do carry balances, but I'm working on it) and removal of AFs. Now that I have decent APRs and no AFs, I've started requesting CLIs. I got denied by first level (and got letters to that effect) and approved by the retention department in the same day/same phone call. So I got a set of denials and a set of approvals with matching letters for the same thing on the same day.

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

That's exactly when I got my limited doubled to $600. A couple days after my second statement cut, which I PIF'd. Just call the backdoor number, and tell them you like the card, but wish you had some more purchasing power. Then ask about a CLI. They may ask what you want to use it for, maybe not. You've used the card well, paid in full, now go get the CLI you deserve! Good Luck!

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

How I made it to 14K was opening accounts and combining them. I stopped at 11k then called the 889 #asking for increases:smileyhappy

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

Wonderin, I think that if you use their card a lot, then you'll stand a very good chance of getting that CLI. They truly believe that they have to be the #1 card in your wallet, and from what I hear (vs. what I've experienced) if you rake in the $$$ for them, they'll reward you with a CLI.

If you are only making occasional purchases, I think you'll have to wait for the Credit Steps to kick in.

Re: Capital One CLI -- when to ask?

I followed advice from the forum, using the back door Cap One number and they gave me a soft pull $500.00 CLI.  I don't have a balance on the card, so that did me a little nicer for my total utilization.  They were very nice and it was not problem.  I have had the card 1 year and received 2 increases.  Started at $500 and now it is $1250. Hope this helps
