Capital One - Excellent Credit Score but Good Credit

hey guys, I have 17 credit cards. I have a credit score of over 780+, no baddies, no nothing bad. I was only pre-approve for the good cards, with no bonus. My thing is although I have excellent credit, how come I'm only in the good category as far as capital one goes? How do I go from good to excellent with capital one? Every other lender doesn't see it as that so I'm just confused. How long will it take for me to get to excellent. I already served 10 years in having good credit, I need to do another 10 to get excellent with cap1? Help me understand, cause being a veteran doesn't mean much.

My last two card I opened in 11/21 and 1/1/23.

there's likely something Cap1 doesn't like about your profile which is why they don't want to give you a SUB (bonus)

No amount of "making your credit better" is going to fix it.

could be too many cards, could be too high of a score, already having too much credit for income, could be any number of reasons. AI is smart, it's probably right (for Cap 1's purposes) more times than it's wrong.

You are free to apply for the excellent credit versions of the cards, and if they won't approve, they will provide a counter offer for the good credit version without the SUB, but I'm not sure how likely an approval with a SUB would be if you weren't preapproved for it already.

Savor One w/it's 10% off uber eats for awhile is a card worth having w/o SUB if that is important to you

Agreed with the above, I think you're just not ths type of customer Cap One is looking for. That's nothing bad, but it just means they don't see a profitable business relationship with you, hence why they won't pre-approve you for their "excellent" tier cards. BTW, their good/great/excellent ratings are arbitrary and who knows how they determine them.

I agree with the above . You are just not their type of customer . I have high 700s 2% utilization and cap one doesn't even offer a secured card for me . I don't think they like all my accounts and my available credit . I am just not their type of customer which is fine as I loath a 3 HP pull for a credit card 😡

GhostCredit,

Welcome to forum.

From my personal experience, CapitalOne caters to those rebuilding their credit and those that will carry balances. After my bankruptcy, CapitalOne would approve me for all their cards. Now I don't get approved for anything, and I think I have excellent credit. Now I continue to use my Walmart card for 5% cash back on online orders and 4% cash back on my Savor Card.

I still believe their main business model is maximize interest on those carrying balances.  Just my opinion.

Re: Capital One - Excellent Credit Score but Good Credit

I wouldn't loose too much sleep or place much emphasis on not being considered top tier with cap1.  They are a good tool for rebuilding but beyond that once the time is right its best to move on to much better cards with better terms than they have.

Re: Capital One - Excellent Credit Score but Good Credit

The best way to deal with Cap1 is just apply for what you want, disregard the stupid "tiers" completely. They are just asking you to pick what bucket you want to be put in and why do their job for them? Also, aside from maybe a Savor and Venture X if you have a solid prfile they really have nothing you need.

Still trying to crack that egg with Capitol One. I had one late with them 7 years ago and still waiting on that late to come off my credit.

Re: Capital One - Excellent Credit Score but Good Credit

Capital One makes their own rules and as you can see, can be tough to figure out. I'd suggest ignore them and deal with lenders who do recognize your profile as excellent, e.g., offer SUB.

Re: Capital One - Excellent Credit Score but Good Credit

Thank you everyone! Today, I just saw that they sent my little brother a savor one credit card in the mail, actually it's a student credit card. I saw that they offer $50 after spending $100. And well I wanted to see if I could get approved for it, and guess what?! It says that they recommend that and the quicksilver for me! Only thing is... I'm not a student. Will they actually know and verify? I used to be a student, wish I signed up for it during that time...
