Capital One Fraud

I have an extended fraud alert with all three of the credit bureaus. An application for credit can’t even be processed without the creditor verifying I’m the applicant by calling the designated number on my alert. Anyhow, recently I applied for a Cap 1 Venture. After verifying I am, indeed, the one who applied, I was approved for a 35k credit line.

I received the card yesterday. I activated it, but it did not allow me to do it through the app and I had to call the number which directed me to the fraud department. They then called me on the designated number on my alerts and subsequently activated the card. I informed I’d be making purchases immediately, and made two separate ~$500 purchases. I also added my son as an authorized user, which they wouldn’t let me do until I received my card. That said, I’m leaving for the opposite coast tomorrow until the end of the month. So I asked that they mail it directly to him, which they obliged. I mention this because later in the day, I attempted to use the card and it was restricted. I spoke with them and they said they’re emailing me a link to upload my driver’s license, front and back. I submitted the requested pictures and am now waiting.

The reason I’m posting here is because when I researched this forum, I noticed others were asked to submit utility bills and their SSC in addition to their ID. I don’t even know where my SSC is, and because I’m going away, I’m worried they may ask for it while I’m away. In that situation, I wouldn’t be able to clear the card until I’m back home, in 3 weeks (daughter’s wedding, and visiting other daughter and grandkids). So, has anyone else been asked for only their license? If so, how did it go after that? And did Capital One clear the restriction within the 72 hours they indicated? Preemptive thanks for your replies.

Re: Capital One Fraud

Yes the DL only worked for me you should be good to go.

My approval process for the Venture card went as follows. Applied on a Wednesday evening and received a call on Friday afternoon requesting a copy of my DL or Passport be submitted. I was sent a link and uploaded photos via my phone. Received a confirmation of ID receipt on Sunday and then an account approval on the following Wednesday for $30K. Received the card a few days later and activated easily with no other issues.

Re: Capital One Fraud

My concern is that the id request came after my approval and card use. But I hope it’s the same result. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Capital One Fraud

My girlfriend went through same in September when she was approved for the Venture. Despite being a previous Cap1 customer and not having any kind of fraud alerts. They "restricted" her account after receiving the card. She had to upload her information and took a few days for their "documentation" team to clear everything.

It is actually illegal for them to ask for your SSC to verify your identity, as the SSC does not have a photo on it.  This is why it is a List C item.  They can ask you for the number when first applying for credit, but the physical card is limited to verifying employment status only.
