I have right now a Platinum Mastercard from Capital One and I read about people upgrading to a Quicksilver but this is very confusing and a PC to quicksilver is not the same as getting a Quicksilver from the scatch.
When you apply for a capital one card you get assigned 2 things (not only Capital One, any creditor).
1) Card Type (Platinum MasterCard, World Mastercard, World Elite Mastercard, Visa or Visa Signature)
2) Reward Type (Quicksilver, Quicksilverone, Venture, Ventureone, ...)
When you apply for a regular platinum you get 1) Platinum Mastercard and 2) whatever reward they have at that time, I have 2% cash back for travel and 1% for all the rest
Now I'm eligible for a PC to quicksilver, BUT my card type will stay Platinum and just my rewards will be Quicksilver with 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
But somebody who applies right away for a Quicksilver card, will get 1) World Elite Mastercard 2) Quicksilver rewards and this is a huge difference
When you go to capital one website and check the card details it tells you this card has World Elite Benefits.
I was told that the card type can never be changed, if you want to get a world or world elite mastercard you need to apply for a card that offers those benefits, but when you PC you don't change benefits, but only change the reward program.
Does this make sense ?
I wanted to PC to quicksilver, because I wanted to have a higher end card, but what makes it higher end is not the rewards, but the higher benefit type and for this I have to apply for new card. I don't need a new card so I gave up
Hope this info will clarify to others
Yes your right. When I got my 1st card after BK it was a Plat. I PC'ed to QS. I called C1 about something and they said its still coded as a Plat but with QS benefits. I asked about WEMC and it was a no go. Have to apply for it. This is the old way. I went to another credit score site and applied and was approved for the WEMC. 3 months or so later, NOW C1 gave up on VS cards and now offers WEMC's. Sheesh! Glad I got the Venture VS beforehand.
After reading about card codes. It all comes down to the Luhn Algorithm. What the card starts out with coding wise Bank Issuer/MC/WMC/WEMCVisa/VS stays. So the Plat will always be the Plat even as a QS. The first 4 numbers are different on each card for that swipe fee and card status from what I have learned.
I started with a QS1 that was Platinum Mastercard. Once I crossed over $5k I PC'd to a Venture that kept the same number but did indeed change to a World MasterCard. Kept the Venture or 7 months and PC'd back to the current regular QS and it still kepted the World MasterCard benefits. So yes, Platinum cards can be changed to World cards...take a look around the forum...many people have had success doing exactly what I did.

+1 ^^^^ This exactly.
There are many reports of people getting an upgrade to WMC by doing a product change once their credit line is equal to or over $5k; it's said to usually happen automatically as part of the PC, and sometimes the CSRs will be aware of it and other times they aren't. People have also received an upgrade to WMC (and Signature) via the EO, but it's cumbersome and IMO generally not worth the hassle.
FYI for those wondering about the Luhn Algorithm, that has to do with the generation of the check digit (very last number) on the credit card, and is used to help prevent a wrong card number from being processed. Years ago it might have come into play indirectly since an upgrade from 'classic' to 'gold', for example, used to mean a change in the BIN (which would change the check digit), but this is no longer the case with most issuers.

I have a PC'd Cap One Platinum that went to Quicksilver, and now shows World MC on the logo. Looking at the actual benefits in that World MasterCard paperwork that came with the card, things like trip insurance and rental auto coverage seem better than many of my travel cards.
I'm not sure what the marginal benefit is to World Elite, I suppose you could rent a jet, but I can't recall the last time I needed to rent a jet.
OP, if you like the rewards percentage on your existing card, might not want to PC to 1.5% QS, but if the WEMC / WMC thing is holding you back, I would not consider that a significant difference.
I recently just PC my Plat to Quicksilver with my 5K CL.
So you can just call and asked to be switched to World Elite?

You can call and ask, but I think it has to do with what bucket they put you in when you first got the card, regardless of the current skin. I currently have a QS sitting at $7.7K, and they won't upgrade it to a WMC. Started out as a QS1, then I PC'd to QS.
