Capital One Platinum Card?

I have a CapOne Platnum credit card recently re-opened that has no AF and 1% cash back. They told me it was an old HSBC account that converted over and was not used in a while. I am confused as the card I have in my wallet looks just like platnum but says rewards on it. I thought platinum was a no rewards card. On the website when I sign in it says the card is platinum and shows me my cash back. I also have a QS1 card that I just upgraded from a different platinum card so I am not confusing the two.

Has anyone else here have or heard of Cap One platnum having 1%cash back? Just seems strange to me.

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

Sounds like it was a converted 1% HSBC card.  They kept the rewards and just added it on a Platinum card.

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

CapOne has had a lot of different card types over the years, and when an account is acquired it doesn't always fit into one of the current products.  "Platinum" is a generic term used by them, but is also the name of their common no-frills card hence the confusion.

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

It's confusing because Platinum is the name of a Capital One product, and it's also the name of Visa and MasterCard products. You could have a Capital One Platinum card that's also a Visa Platinum. Or you could have a Capital One Quicksilver that's a Platinum MasterCard.

In your case, it sounds like you have the Capital One Platinum Preferred. It's a 1% rewards card that we hear about here from time to time. It's likely that your Platinum Preferred card is also either a Visa Platinum or Platinum MasterCard. Smiley Happy

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

I have a capital one platinum 1% card opened with them like 9 months ago. Just merge it into  a better card. I am waiting for a CLI before I merge mine into my savor.

Platnum preferred make sense. Thanks to all for the clarification.

I guess its a "preferred" bucketed sub-prime card!!

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

I don't actually see the word preferred anywhere on my 1% reward platinum. The card even looks exactly like the previous platinum I had without any rewards.

Mine says rewards on it instead of platinum.

I think you should sock drawer it but give it another year before closing. Probably you'll be able to combine it or upgrade it in 6 months or so.

Re: Capital One Platinum Card?

I merged the non rewards card to the rewards platinum a few months back. The rewards one itself is eligible to be merged with another card but I am waiting for a CLI before I do. I want to get a CLI on both that card and the destination card before I merge since you can't get a CLI for 6 months after a merge.
