Capital One Product Change Debacle

On August 13, I was told by Capital One chat that I had two offers available on my Quicksilver One (MC) account which I've had since April: upgrade to Quicksilver VISA or upgrade to Venture One VISA Signature.

I've never had a VISA Signature or WEMC so I chose the Venture One upgrade on the assumption that since he offered me the VISA Signature, I'd be getting the VISA Signature.

Well, I found out today that I'll be receiving a Venture One MasterCard "Platinum" (which is a euphemism for "normal MasterCard"). It's not really a big deal to be honest but I was quite disappointed that I was misled.  I spoke to two agents and three different supervisors who all told me it was impossible to change a VISA product to a MasterCard product and vice-versa.  I was also told previously that I'd have to apply for the WEMC version, which I did the other night and was turned down because my account wasn't six months old. I wasn't angry or anything but I asked, "well, as a courtesy can you at least give me the World or World Elite MasterCard version of the Venture One?"

Sorry, no we can't.  World and World Elite are invite-only and cannot be forced on an account.

Invite-only even though you can apply for it if you have the link.

I read in another thread that Capital One is a disorganized company.  It all makes sense now.  I love Capital One but their CSRs don't really seem to know anything.

I've written an email to the EO asking if it's truly invite-only or if he just didn't know the answer and that's what he came up with.  I will say they were all very polite and apologetic which I appreciated, although I was also polite and appreciative of their help.

Re: Capital One Product Change Debacle

Well it's true that you cannot change networks on your card and if someone told you that it was possible in the first place they were severely misinformed, which is not unusual for cap one.

They are a mess of a company at times and it's just easier not to deal with upgrades and just apply for what you want directly. The WEMC is not something they upgrade to, it would have to be applied for and they only recently started offering it.

The world can be obtained as an upgrade but it requires the right person on the other end of the phone or chat and good luck finding them, also you would need I believe a $5k CL minimum which is odd considering Cap One gives out $300 WEMC buypower cards. Anyhow sorry for your troubles, there's only so much you can do or expect with cap one's customer service.

I'm sorry you got bad information from the CSR... I'll add that when I got my own QS1 upgraded I had a similar experience with the information from the chat agent being less than precise.  In my case, I was offered an upgrade to a no-AF Quicksilver or a no-AF Venture - however I knew from being on here that the "no-AF Venture" was actually a Venture One, which has different reward rates.

Many people on here have reported getting an upgrade to World MasterCard when they do a PC and their credit line is $5k or greater.  If your signature is correct, your credit line is $3k, which means you'll be getting the 'Platinum' version.

All is not lost, though...  Smiley Happy

When you do the math, you'll come to realize (if you haven't already) that the no-AF Quicksilver is a better deal than the Venture One - but in this case, it can actually work out for the best that you got the Venture One.  Here's how... work on getting CLIs on your Venture One to get your credit line to $5k, then to a PC to a Quicksilver... chances are, it will come as a World MasterCard.  Smiley Wink

While some will say it's a meme, it's clear to many of us that with Capital One specifically they tend to give more generous CLIs when their cards get heavy usage (I can personally attest to this), so for best results you'll need to use your Venture One as heavily as possible.

Try not to let this get you discouraged... I know it sucks to get bad information, and it's even worse when they don't make their word good.  However in this case you do have a real opportunity to "make lemons into lemonade".  Smiley Wink

Re: Capital One Product Change Debacle

Thank you both for your replies.  They both contain helpful information.

creditguy - I'm not gonna bother anymore trying to get an upgrade to either of them unless the EO has some magical button they can press and they feel like pressing it for me.  I've had good luck with Cap One CSRs as far as getting done what I needed done but every time I call there's always some confusion.  At this point, I'm beginning to think it's me!

UncleB - That's great advice!  I put as much spend as I could through the QS1 so I don't think I'll have a hard time with the Venture One.  So far they like me for CLIs since they tripled mine when my account became eligible.  I'll keep that in mind and wait until I'm at $5k before I give it another shot, again, unless the EO can do something that we don't know about.

Thanks again to both!

My 'fingers are crossed' that your EO contact will be fruitful... be sure to let us know how it goes!  Smiley Wink

the QS1 has a $39 annual fee and is a Mastercard so when you request to be changed to a Quicksilver or a VentureONE, 2 things will happen, they can NOT turn a Mastercard to a Visa like you pointed out and you will have to fight them to remove the $39 annual, this is 1  of the reasons i tell people to apply for the Capt1 Journey Visa because it has NO annual fee plus it has the same requirements as the QS1 and when you request for the Journey to be converted to a Quicksilver they can do it and it will look like a normal Quicksilver Visa plus you won't have to fight them to remove the $39 annual fee because the Journey Visa never had an annual fee Smiley Wink

As a rule of thumb the less you try to accomplish with Capital One the better. They are disorganized and not easy to work with when you need any sort of manual intervention. Sorry for your troubles.

Re: Capital One Product Change Debacle

I think the Cap One eventually wants you to apply for the regular QS Visa and Venture Signature cards. I think doing so and then combining your old cards into their prime cards is the path of least resistance rather than trying to PC to World and World Elite MC's.

Agreed. If you have a card in a different "bucket", such as a Platinum or QS1, you're much better off reapplying for the higher tier vs trying to work magic with the old card. The lower tier cards usually stay stuck at low limits, 24% APRs, etc and the tier is hard to upgrade too.

Better to just reapply or get a WEMC somewhere else IMO. Upgrades and account changes are not a strong point of Capital One's.

Re: Capital One Product Change Debacle

UncleB - Will do! I'll let everyone know in this thread if/when I get a response.

Kdm and driftless - I'm going to take both of your advice and just take what they give me in terms of upgrades and then when it's time to go for a Venture or Quicksilver I'll just apply for it flat-out, unless they offer me the Quicksilver World upgrade like UncleB mentioned.
