Capital One Travel Notification

Ok. I'm in China quite a bit. And want to use my Cap 1 QS for hotel stays. I went online to do a travel notification. But, received a notification that because of the new chip cards, Cap 1 doesn't do travel notifications anymore. I then tried requesting it by chat and was given the same information. The representative told me that I would get a text or email alert if there is a problem.

Both my NFCU CashRewards and Discover It cards allow/require travel notfications.

Has anyone had a problem with Cap 1 while traveling outside of the US with  chip cards since this "no travel notification" policy has been instituted?

Wow! I didn't know that. I am not traveling internationally for another year, but that is good to know. When I take a card on a domestic trip I always do a travel notification. It always makes things smoother. Thanks for the information.

Re: Capital One Travel Notification

My pleasure!!! Glad the info helps. I plan to take my NFCU and Discover in case there is a problem. I don't really trust this "no travel notification" policy.

I would feel the same way! I gave a Stash travel notification to Synchrony and they indicated they still might decline a purchase if it looked unusual. I only used it for my hotel which was a Stash hotel. I used another card for all the rest of my purchases. PenFed never gives me problems when I give a travel notificaiton so I took my PenFed Rewards card.

Exactly. I'm afraid Synchrony's policy might be the same as Cap1 and you did a travel notification. Sooo, my other cards will definitely be getting attention. I don't want to be embarassed while trying to make a purchase because it's declined.

Re: Capital One Travel Notification

Both my wife and I have traveled internationally without a problem using Cap One cards. However, I find that their fraud algorithm is a little tight, meaning that it gets tripped far more than Amex or Chase.* It is easy to reply to Cap One's text messages verifying a transaction but that is only after it was declined initially. For that reason I view Cap One as my back up, not primary, travel card.

*  One restaurant in Atlanta always sees a decline with a Cap One card, no matter how times I dine there.  I talked to a CSR representative about it and she said that if the merchant has had previous fraud issues, then that can trip a decline.  Gas stations in TN have triggered declines as well as a TV purchase from Crutchfield.  I have had a  purchase from a small UK shop declined and the Cap One CSR said that the way that the transaction was entered tripped the decline, I assume that means a difference in systems.

FWIW I use my QS cards to make online purchases from both Canada and Australia, and Capital One has never declined one.  (I would think that international online would be even more risky than international 'card present', but they weren't bothered.)

The first time I made a Canadian purchase I did an online chat with Capital One to let them know (since international is rare for me) and the CSR almost seemed confused as to what my concern was.  I was reassured that it would be fine, and indeed it was.  Smiley Wink

Smae here, regularly use cap one to make purchases from Australia and the UK without issue.   Only problem was a few years back trying to top up a UK SIM online, which apparently is a well-known way of testing if a stolen card is still working (I was told that at the time the US equivalent is buying a small amount of gas at a self-serve station in a busy city)

I really didn't know that anyone did that domestically anymore!  Have you tried not doing it?

Re: Capital One Travel Notification

Thanks Driftless, Uncle B and LongtimeLurker. I will still use my Cap1 for hotel stay. And hopefully, there will be no issue with it, as I used it for the reservation with Marriott no problem. But, if there is an issue, I will still have my other cards with me. I really want to give Cap1 some use as I have been using my NFCU and Discover cards quite a bit more.
