Capital One - no converting allowed? Really?

I just called Capital One to see if they can take my non-rewards card and change it into something with rewards (this card has minimal usage, but its my oldest credit line, so I'd like to keep it open) and I was told they don't convert cards, I'd have to apply for a new card and then have two. If I did apply for the new card, then I couldn't bring the history to the new card. The only thing cap1 cards can share are rewards.

Has anyone ever been able to work around this with Cap1? Two people said this is a hard rule, no exceptions...

Thanks

They won't do it.  I've tried everything.  They want you to apply for another card. I refuse to carry two cards from one bank.  That's my number one rule dealing with banks and credit cards.  I'm going to call Cap One back today to go ahead and cancel the card.  I opened it in 1/2001, but my Target Visa was opened in 10/2000.  I'm tired of hearing the name Cap 1 now.

Yep, DI is right.  I'm about 100% sure most of us Cap-1'ers have tried to combine cards at some point in time, but what used to work a couple of years ago is no longer an option.  I'm not sure if it's just that rules changed over time or people abused it?!?

I wasn't referring to the posts here. I think they're all great post.  What I was meaning to say, I'm tired of dealing with Cap 1.  I'm sure others are too.

Wow... Alright, CAP1 is on my list to close next.

Just closed Target a few minutes ago...5 years $200 CL and no CLI ever. Lady encouraged me to use my card more, "show activity and the CLI will come". I guess using the card and paying it in full makes me a bad customer for them. Oh well...its now gone. This wallet thinning is liberating.

My CL with Target use to be $1500.  It started off as a store card that I received in college.  They automatically converted  it to Target Visa.  They CLD me to $1000 for no reason about 3 years ago.  I got upset and had it decreased to $500.  I'm keeping the Target card  because its my oldest account that is still opened.  Also, fas a security precaution,  I do appreciate having at least one  very low limit card to use when making Internet purchases.

Target & Cap1 are my oldest cards, but I understand that the history will remain, and drop off after 10 years. That said, my other cards are only younger by a year or two, so in 10 years when these drop off, i'll still have good history.

After writing a letter to CAPONE I was able to get a PC to a rewards card, it may or may not work for you.

Good luck.

IMO, Capital One is one of the best for people rebuilding.  Their secured card has great terms. They have credit steps.   They generally don't blacklist.

They also have rewards cards for people which good credit.   They have no foreign transaction fee.

I think the no conversion policy and having to apply for new card is a minor issue for those who have built up their credit with Capital One.
