Capital one chat...completely useless lol

I finally got the chat  feature, it never would pop up for me most days lol. I inquired about combining my 2 cards because anytime I try online it states I am not eligible and give reasons than NONE apply to my situation. The chat person basically just cut and pasted what I already have been told when I try to combine, I again told him none of those reasons apply to me. So then he comes up with some "other reasons" which again do not apply to me.

He finally says and I quote " combining accounts is new to capital one" excuse me NEWSmiley Mad what on earth are you talking about. I finally just closed the chat

Just trying to combine my Q1 into my Q and I continue to get this message on why I can't:

  • At least one of your cards had missed or late payments in the last 6 months; has a balance over its credit limit; or was charged off in the last 12 months meaning, due to a series of missed payments, the account was closed  NOPE doesn't apply
  • The card you intend to close as a part of the combination has been open for less than 6 months  NOPE doesn't apply
  • All of your cards have a balance greater than $0 (at least one card must have a $0 balance and no pending transactions) NOPE one card sits at 0
  • Secured cards, co-brand cards (e.g., GM, Union Plus) and private label retail cards (e.g., Kohl’s, Neiman Marcus) cannot be combined at this time  NOPE
  • Personal cards cannot be combined to create a single credit line greater than $50,000 and small business cards cannot be combined to create a single credit line greater than $100,000 NOPE

Generally my experience with Cap-1 too, which is one reason why I closed all my Cap-1 accounts.

Re: Capital one chat...completely useless lol

When I inquired about upgrading my mom's QS1 to QS, Capital One told me that they didn't have any offers at the time. Instead, they said to apply for the QS and then combine the two after 6 months of owning the QS. I asked them a couple of times if they were sure they could combine them and I was assured. We haven't hit 6 months yet so hearing this is a little concerning.
What are your next plans for trying to combine the two?

Re: Capital one chat...completely useless lol

Honestly I am thinking of just closing them once I pay off the little balance I have on one.

Hi OP,

Sucks that you want to combine and it isn't allowed.  I think some folks often overlook the statement made on the CapOne combination page.  We look at the list and think that as long as the criteria is met then we should be go to go...but they specifically say that those are only SOME of the criteria and not all.  They mention that other factors are considered.   What are the other factors?  It could be payments not sufficent enough to them, lack of account usage, inquiries from a recent soft pull, the list could go on and on.  As the consumer we aren't privy to what those factors are and probably never will be.

Best of luck in combining your cards down the line if you choose to hang on to them.

Re: Capital one chat...completely useless lol

This happened to me as well. I had 6 accounts and couldn’t combine any. I reached out to the EO couldn’t give me the reason either.

I decided to start closing accounts to streamline and was going to keep just one Cap1 card. Well, as soon as I closed my WMC, that started as as something else, it immediately let me combine accounts online. There was something with THAT card was the issue. None of the reasons listed, there’s just something in the code that prevented it and no one is going to be able to tell you what it is, not even the EO.

Quite new.  I combined my first cards in either 2000 or 2001, so basically they've only allowed this for at least 75% of the company's history.  Smiley Wink

Re: Capital one chat...completely useless lol

I think they changed some of the wording...

I know it used to be that the card you were closing in the combination had to have a $0 STATEMENT balance AND current balance.   Maybe that is the issue?

Re: Capital one chat...completely useless lol

This happened to me as well. I kept messaging them and no luck had the message escalated to a manager and then technical support to only end up with that same copy and paste message,  bc they couldnt figure out why it wouldnt allow me to combine. A few days later I tried again and it worked just fine. Rep said, Maybe pending credits/payment was holding up the process. I think they just have a system error.
