Cash back with Double Cash and Custom Cash

Can someone help me understand using a Double Cash in conjunction with a Custom Cash. Is it better to redeem for cash back separately or from one combined Thank You Points account? Once cash back via Double Cash is converted to TYPs, can I still redeem future cash back as something other than TYPs (statement credits, direct deposits, etc.) or will I always have to convert to TYPs? Any help you folks may offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Doing a conversion of your DC's cash rewards to TYPs is just a simple transaction. Doing it once doesn't commit you to doing it again. You don't even have to convert all of your existing DC rewards to TYPs. You will be able to redeem any remaining and future DC cashback as anything you want -- TYPs, statement credit, paper check, etc.

Thanks, @Curious_George2. I am still a bit uncertain about other aspects of the process. Do I need to make sure that I only convert to points as a one time thing or is there not even an option to permanently convert cash back to TYPs for the DC? Do I have to set up a TYP account for DC, set one up for CC, and then combine them? Sorry for all the questions, but I have always redeemed DC rewards as cash back and only just received the CC.

Re: Cash back with Double Cash and Custom Cash

If you're only interested in redeeming for cash, then none of these questions really matter.  Redemption for cash is very straightforward on both cards.  Just a couple of clicks and you're done.  There's no need to convert to TYP and combine unless you want to use the points for something other than cash.  Honestly, though, cash back is probably the best redemption for TYP on these cards anyway.  So just redeem cash the normal way on each card.

The reason some (like myself) convert the cash rewards from the Double Cash to TYP is to bypass the $25 minimum redemption.

Thanks for the post, @UncleB. As I asked above, do I need to make sure that I only convert to points as a one time thing or is there not even an option to permanently convert cash back to TYPs for the DC? Do I have to set up a TYP account for DC, set one up for CC, and then combine them?

How the process worked out for me didn't match my previous understanding, so I can see how it can be confusing.

What I had to do was choose the option on my DC to 'convert cash back to TYP' - they had been bugging me with pop-ups and adverts forever, but I never bothered since I'm interested in cash back.  I assumed once I chose the option I would end up with a(nother) card earning TYPs which for me were a hassle (at that time, the converstion to cash was a half cent, not the 1¢ it is now with Rewards+ and Premier).

Anyway, choosing that option established a new TYP account for the Double Cash, but it didn't make my card into a "TYP earning" card like some had indicated.  Basically the card still earns cash, but if I want I can manually move the cash over to TYPs.  This is the part that can't be undone... once you move cash to TYPs, it can't be pulled back to the Double Cash as cash rewards.

This is a manual process, and as far as I know there's no way to automate it - on my setup, I must go in and manually move the cash rewards over to points.  I can move any amount I want, no minimums.

About the TYP account... I already had one for my Rewards+ card, so when they gave me one for the Double Cash I then had two.  If the info on each TYP account profile is an exact match (name matches perfectly, phone number, etc.) you can merge them yourself online.  In my case, the new TYP account was missing the suffix on my last name, so I had to call for assistance.  Name is the one thing you can't edit yourself; they added the suffix for me, then I was able to merge them myself on the website (I expected them to take care of this for me since I made it clear why I was calling, but nope, they left it for me to do, LOL).

I'm now able to move my DC cash rewards over to my TYP account, and redeem for cash (direct deposit) in any amount at 1 TYP = 1¢.

Edited to add:  There is a $1 minimum for converting Double Cash cash rewards to TYPs.  Thanks to @Curious_George2 below for the clarification! Smiley Very Happy

Disclaimers:  I have the Rewards+ card attached to my TYP account, and I don't know if the same redemption rules apply for those who only have a Double Cash with no other TYP earning card.  Also, Citi IT is known to be janky, which is why I stress that this is my setup, since I don't want anybody to get upset if they experience something different.  I barely use my DC so I had little to lose by testing it out, and it just happened to work out rather well.

Re: Cash back with Double Cash and Custom Cash

The same redemption rules apply for those who only have a Double Cash with no other TYP earning card. I am such a person and the process @UncleB describes is exactly the same as what I experienced (minus the bits about merging two TYP accounts).

One small quibble: there is a $1 minimum for converting DC's cash rewards to TYPs. Ask me how I know! 🤑

Whoops, I missed that!  doh.gif

Thanks for that extra bit of info... my post has been updated and credit given where due. Smiley Wink

(Even with a $1 minimum to convert to TYPs, I'm sure we can agree that's still a world better than $25!)

Re: Cash back with Double Cash and Custom Cash

Thanks, @UncleB and @Curious_George2. Much appreciated. I was hoping it was as you described, @UncleB, as I don't want to permanently convert my DC to a TYPs earning card in case 1 TYP < 1 cpp. I will probably confirm this with Citi Chat and post here if I am able to do so.
