I purchase a lot of Apple products so it looks like I'll be making a phone call soon! 
Just called Barclays to change my apple card to the rewards version and it was a 2 min call with a sweet CLI from 3.5 to 5K No HPs or new apps. They just read the disclosure and said i'll get the new card in 5-7 days and changes would be active after 3 business days.
For those having a hard time changing to the rewards version - i called the number on the back of the card and said i don't use this much and would like to use it if they can change me to the rewards version. She transferred me to an account specialist and it was done.
Looks like i have an opportunity to use this dormant card again outside of my macbook purchase

I think it all depends on the number people are calling. It seems there has been more success with the number on the back of the card. Also, a lot of people tried calling the day it was live so maybe communication didn't go out to the entire Barclays team quite yet. Seems to be more success now that some time has passed.

I was just able to upgrade as well. I've had my card since 6/14 and they upgraded me with no problem. Thank OP!
