My friend got this card and spent the minimum to get the bonus. Then he cashed it out as a check..Do you think this was a wise move? I don't think he travels at all haha
Redeem for cash back is pretty straight forward. You can redeem points at a rate 1 cent apiece. So 40000 pts are $400. You can also redeem these points for gift card, usually you can redeem 40000 pts for the gift cards with a face value at $400, but Chase sometimes offer discount for it. For example, right now, you can get $100 Kohl's gift card for only 9000 pts, which can save you 1000 pts.
Also, if you have CSP, you can redeem the points for travel. With CSP, you can always get 20% off when redeeming the points so 40000 pts can give you $500 for flight, hotel, or car rental. You can also transfer your points 1:1 to some Chase travel partners such as United Airline. The point value may vary if you transfer to the partner program, but usually it will give you a rate higher than 1 cent apiece. But since you mention your friend never travels, this may not be the best option for him.
I'm sure lots of people here will say that's not a wise move. Honestly, if he feels he won't travel, then i guess it's not a bad idea to cash it in. With that being say, there's still cab rides, parking lots and hotel food..

Well its probaly not the worst usage in the world, but definately not the best either. Why did he want csp just for the 400 dollars ? For me personally there is obviously much better value with travel, but its up to each person hwo they value the points.

Yes, i understand the $400 is appealing, but it will be so much better if used with travel.

If you are into churning for cashback rewards, makes perfect sense. The $400 is pretty high, look how excited people get about Freedom or Double Cash offering just $200 (or not offering in the latter case!)
If your friend doesn't travel like you say then cash back is the next best thing.

Well, in that case....I guess it's worth it.
