Hi,
My DW is "prequalified" for a few Chase credit cards. We'd like to get the Chase Sapphire Preferred for the intro bonus of 50,000 points. She currently has a Chase Slate that we don't use, can she convert the Slate to a Freedom for the 5% bonus categories in addition to getting the CSP? If so how do we go about this? She opened the Slate a few years ago for a balance transfer and don't use it at this time due to lack of points or rewards. It is currently paid off and sitting idle. I appreciate the advice, thanks.
Welcome to the forums! You can request a product change from Slate to Freedom with either a phone call or a secure message. I suggest the latter and making sure to say something like "Freedom with the rotating 5% categories," since there have been a few mistakes made where they assume you meant Freedom Unlimited (1.5x on everything). If you have significant restaurant and general travel spend, you may want to consider the CSR instead which should have the same signup bonus. The AF is significantly higher but it does include the $300 in travel credits, lot of other perks, and earns 3x on those categories rather than 2x. You can only have one Sapphire product now, so it's a good idea to make sure you get into the card that suits you best.
I would apply for the both CSR/CSP and Freedom, then product change Slate into Freedom Unlimited. When you apply to two cards from Chase within the same day (preferably close timing and seperate browsers) they pull just one report. I applied and approved for CSP and Freedom the same day, resulting a pull from EX and EQ (15 days ago). Then once you product change from Slate to Freedom Unlimited, you will have the Chase Trifecta for most points!
