Re: Chase Sapphire Preferred is no match for AMEX

Delta still has some nice redemption options.  The man who coined the term skypesos points out that there can still be great value with Delta.  Especially with the transfer bonuses.  I hope they don't switch to a fixed value program like was speculated about a few days ago on the travel blogs.

Re: Chase Sapphire Preferred is no match for AMEX

Id have to go with CSP, I have both this and Amex Gold which I am trialing to see which one to pick. I love Amex but I think I prefer CSP given the UR points I rate higher than MR. Although it really is in the eye of the beholder if you spend a lot on airfares then I think Amex Gold preferred is better but you would have to spend enough to compensate for the higher AF. For me CSP works well as I do travel but not enough to justify Amex Gold Preferred, I do spend a lot on restaurants and would prefer points towards future travel as opposed to cash back plus I am not too thrilled about Citi customer service. I feel like there are more options for higher multiplier points. I use the mall frequently especiialy as I buy a lot of things from Barnes and Noble (10points per dollar). I think CSP will also grow in terms of their 1:1 programs, they are definitely making a hit for Amex customers

Count me as another who prefers the Sapphire Preferred for a few reasons. -UR mall has better point bonuses than the Membership Rewards mall. -No excise tax. -Instant transfers -Ability to combine between other UR card including business cards and other non-AUs. -Combined with Freedom and Chase checking makes it even better. -Flexibility of hotel redemptions is great. -No foreign transaction fees.

Wow you guys have a lot of AmEx cards, my gosh I've only had my AmEx Costco card a little over a year now.  Is it that hard to get the Platinum one?  Which Platinum one would the majority of you recommend?

Thanks for the replies guys you rock!

Getting an Amex platinum really isn't that difficult these days, assuming you're willing to fork out the $450 AF and have a half-decent credit record.

If you're trying to decide on which amex is best for you, you need to look at your spending/travelling habits.

1. How much do you spend per year, and in what categories (travel, gas, groceries, etc.)?

2. How much do you travel per year, both domestically and internationally?

3. What other perks are valuable to you (airport lounge access, FF miles, etc.)?

4. How much would you be willing to pay in an annual fee?

EX 798, EQ 789, TU 784
American Express Platinum (NPSL) || Bank of America Privileges with Travel Rewards Visa Signature - $23,200 CL
Barclays American Airlines Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard - $20,000 CL || Chase IHG Rewards World Mastercard - $25,000 CL
Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa Signature - $12,700 CL || Chase United MileagePlus Club World Elite MasterCard - $26,500 CL
Citibank Hilton Reserve Visa Signature - $20,000 CL || J.P. Morgan Ritz Carlton Visa Signature - $23,500 CL

+ 1

Amex is also doing a few offers where they waive the AF so you can at least test drive it. When the year is up I think I will be cancelling both Amex gold and Green and just keep CSP until my travel activity chnges justifying Amex PG

Having a Chase Freedom, I'd much rather apply for another AMEX in the future than for the SP.

Backdating is another reason for it as well.

Having the Freedom/Checking combo pretty much has me covered already.

I might consider the United Mileage Plus though in the future.

But the CSP, not really attracted to it.

I don't think that a Chase checking account is an option for me since there are no branches here in Pittsburgh, but I'm wondering, what does the Freedom/Checking combo provide over just the Freedom?
