Is this even legal? I am guessing it is, but.... lol.
CFU is a better card for sure, but the auto conversion just sounds illegal to me.

I see it as an "upgrade" because Slate has no rewards attached to it past the initial BT. Terms remain same, so perfectly legal.

Right, and pretty sure that all credit cards have language that the rewards program can change or be terminated at any time.
e.g. Amex BCE: "We may change the terms of this program at our discretion. If you violate or abuse this program,
you may forfeit some or all of your accrued reward dollars"
(And I got hit by the second sentence!)

I woke up today to find that my Slate account is showing up as a Freedom Unlimited card now. No notification yet. Has this happened to others?
Do you carry a balance? I have couple $K on a 0% BT offer, I'm curious if they might auto PC me or if they are only doing it for cards with no BT balance.

That's actually a good question for those of us who currently has a balance on it. I wouldn't mind the upgrade except I already have a FU and also a Freedom card as a AU and was in the process of closing it by the end of the year.
5-6 weeks ago I got the "It's official, you've been upgraded to Freedom Unlimited" letter. I called immediately and had them move me to Freedom 5% rewards card. I've been using the card regularly for groceries and home improvement.
Today, I get the exact same email again. "It's official.... " Chase doesn't have a clue.

Since the Slate Dashboard (The only time Chase ever gave an actual FICO score) has been killed off in favor of Credit Journey that everybody gets, there's zero reason to want to keep Slate anyway. Now the APR range is the same for Slate and FU as well. (I thought Slate was lower before -- can somebody confirm or deny this?)
Now that you mention it, the PC was right after I paid off a 0% BT.
