Chase Slate

Has anyone been able to utilize the 15 months BT offer the Chase Slate card is offering  to payoff a loan and not some other credit card?  Thanks!

Re: Chase Slate

Can you apply BT online only?  Or are there other methods?

Discover, and many other lenders, but Disc is the one I'm familiar with, send out BT checks that you can basically use for anything.

Thanks! I have Discover and other lenders  BT offers, but I want an offer with no BT fee.  I am thinking  Chase doesn't send out BT checks or allow electronic BTs to pay off loans.

Re: Chase Slate

I have the Chase Slate (just recently got them to convert my Freedom to a Slate and give me the introductory offer of no-fee BT at 0% for 15 months, but they kept my regular APR at 22% which I think is kind of crappy of the, but I'm not complaining right now.)

They did not send out any checks with the introductory paperwork.  I tried to do a BT online and it would only let me use 80% of my credit line.  I called in (because I remembered that Chase will let you use more if you do it over the phone with a CSR) and it came out to be 82%.  I have no idea how they get their calculations, but since I'm trying to use as much of my credit line as possible for the BT, I did that.

Now I'm going to use more money to take it up to within 90%.  I guess I could go up to within a dollar of my credit limit but it seems prudent to keep it under 90%.  If you wonder why I am being so weird about that, it's because I am carrying debt and I'd like to carry as much as possible of it, for as long as possible, at 0% interest.  And I feel that Chase owes me that much - I paid them a lot of interest over the years when I was in way more terrible debt than I am in now.  They've been real stinkers about not changing my terms (APR, credit limit, card type) forever, and now that the ice is breaking up - first a card type change, then the ability to do BTs, which I didn't have before, even after converting my plain card to a Freedom - and since they still haven't changed my regular APR to something reasonable - I'm definitely going to take full advantage of any and all 0% I can get out of them.

Re: Chase Slate

Oh, I forgot to say that the way I am going to use it up to 90% of the credit limit, and this is the way I do "homemade balance transfers" when a card (like Citi, who gave me a card and then cut off my BT privileges way before I got close to the limit, I was only up to like 30%) is like this:

Just pay a normal bill you would typically pay with cash with the credit card instead.  Think:  Utilities, phone, cell phone, cable TV or whatever.  Then use that money to pay off the other bill you wish to BT but are not able to.  Voila - you have just done a homemade balance transfer (if they are offering the same 0% for 15 months for purchases, and they happen to be doing that.)

Hello,

I have the Freedom card with an $8,000 CL, and I asked the CSR if I could convert to Slate and get the 0% BT offer. I was told no, and that  I have to apply for the Slate card  to get the Slate BT offer.  Should I call them again?  But my other dilemma is, I need to get approved for at least $15,000.  If they only approve me for $5000 for the Slate card, I am planning to transfer the credit line from Freedom to Slate card.

Re: Chase Slate

Hi Don,

Here's what happened:   I applied for the Slate but got the "wait and we'll tell you our decision" answer, and I didn't think that sounded good.  So I called the backdoor analyst number and they looked it up and said it was denied.  I asked them to reconsider and they asked many questions, like why I filed BK ten (yes, ten!) years ago and I just did a lot of explaining about my credit report.  They were friendly, but I had been through this before with Chase and never got anything out of it (except the time they converted my regular card to Freedom.)

She said she'd put it through for reconsideration and would place me on hold.  I just knew it was going to come back "no" so at the last second I mentioned to her that I'd be happy to exchange my Freedom card for the Slate.  Apparently that was easier for her to get her boss (I assume) to approve.  Since it was the same credit line, and I agreed for them to close the Freedom, they said they could just open up a Slate in place of the Freedom.  They made a big deal out of saying it is not converting a card, but opening up a new one.  But  I was confused about how she also kept implying it would be the same account... yet I was, in fact, eligible for the promotion.  I got a new card in the mail, new number, of course, and the old account is now closed.

More than you wanted to know, maybe, but my point was that I got this by applying for Slate, being turned down, then while asking them to reconsider, offering up my Freedom card as an exchange.  My credit limit is a strange $3,788 and they didn't even round that up, they kept it the same with the same terrible regular APR.  Good luck to you if you can negotiate anything with them.

Re: Chase Slate

Thanks for your responses.  I appreciate your help.  Before I apply, I need to find out if an installment loan can be transferred to them.

Re: Chase Slate

You could just call and ask.  It wouldn't hurt to just tell them you are considering getting that card for the BT offer and want to know first what kind of balances can be transferred.  You don't have to apply or even give personal information (sometimes I call and tell them I don't need them to look up my account - I just have a general informational question.)  Just flat-out ask them your question.  Good luck!
