Chase and Combining Limits

hi everyone!

long time lurker, first time poster.

i've learned so much about credit from this forum and i appreciate it from every single one of you!

I was recently approved for Amazon Prime Visa for $2500 about a month ago, and I have two other cards from Chase: Freedom and Slate. The slate I never used because they only gave me a $500 limit, so it's been sitting in the sock drawer. Freedom has been stuck at $1000, and was denied for a CLI (took the HP, I was so sad for the denial). I've heard that chase is not big on giving CLI and the best way to get it is to open new accounts and combine limits.

I was wondering if it was possible to combine slate and freedom into my amazon visa without affecting my credit score? My AAoA is 1Y9M, my oldest account is actually BoA (6years now) and I've had that around the same time as my Freedom (5years6months) Need Advice please!

how would I request to combine limits as well? secure message or phone call?

Don't know my exact scores, but score for the Amazon Prime Visa was 719, and for CLI on Freedom was 691. Wasn't sure what was used, still learning about this whole credit thing.

Welcome to the forums!  Unfortunately, Chase has a policy where they will only move all but $500 from a card, even if you close it.  You could move $500 from Freedom but that would be the only option.  Calling or secure message are both fine to do that.

Thanks so much! I really like Chase (I know some people don’t favor them as much), shame they don’t fully transfer the limits since my Slate is useless 😂😂

I think I read that after a month or two of inactivity on a card, Chase will drop the $500 restriction. Never tried it, and I might be thinking of another issuer or the practice may have changed.

Re: Chase and Combining Limits

I waited 90 days on my Slate (2000s card combined into my Freedom in early 2016) and on my replacement Slate (combined into my CSP (which had been a loaner for the Slate's limit anyway) prior to me PCing it to CSR this summer).  It may be up to the individual analyst as to whether it can really be done, but for most of the people here (myself included) I'd suggest avoiding having to speak to a Chase analyst as they can feel like an interrogation.  I did end up getting the last $500 from that original Slate card, but essentially the analyst treated it as a CLI (HP and all without even warning me) request... for $500.

Re: Chase and Combining Limits

It seems to be rather YMMV these days... a few months back I was able to do a complete reallocation from an IHG MasterCard to my Amazon Visa (closing the IHG) by just sending a secure message.  It had probably been five or six months since the IHG had been used at that point.  A HP was never mentioned, and I didn't get one after the fact (thankfully).

Many have reported having to leave $500 on the card to be closed, though, so there might (?) be some CSR/analyst discretion involved (in addition to the usual factors).

FWIW I 'second' @K-in-Boston's advice to avoid speaking to the analyst if possible, and I suggest submitting the request via SM since it creates an audit trail of what's going on and there's less opportunity for miscommunication (and interrogation).  That said, occasionally we read of people being told via SM that they must call, and of course in those cases the phone call is necessary.
