I put in all the info, I asked them to increase my credit line by 2k. The next page confirmed what I had put. The third page said they could increase by 1k right now and that no credit file was pulled. Then they asked me to take it, or cancel. The fourth page said congrats your new line is... 

There was a button on that last page that said something like "request more." I assume if you go for that they would hard pull.

Interesting.   I tried 3 months ago, asking for 3K, I didn't get a counter, just a "We will notify you" type of message, followed later by a denial (and a HP).   Your option seems great!

In regards to Citi in the early years of having accounts with this bank using the online form  all cli's were soft pulls, then one day I got burned with a HARD pull for a cli request using the online form never again will I use it, as it is always a toss up whether it will be a soft or hard pull, so what I do I always call Citi to request a cli and ask will it be a hard pull for a cli, reps have been pretty good with notifying beforehand if a credit pull needs to be pulled.  All my cli's now have been granted with no hard pulls.  I feel this is the safest way to request a cli.

Yup these are the exact steps because I just got a CLI on my regular TY card. I asked for 5K and got 1K LOL. I tried 

Dear CHNCEIT, This email confirms the following action completed online for your Citi Credit Card account ending in ****.  See detail(s) below:  Credit Line Increase Request and Instant Approval: Your credit line increase request was instantly approved on July 20, 2013 for $1,000.00. Your new credit limit is effective immediately.
