Citi DC closed due to inactivity! - Update: account reinstated

I'm so upset! I didn't receive a notice or anything. Just an email that the account is now closed. The last time I remember using it was pre-Covid. I should've been more careful and will be going forward.

Questions:

1. Has anyone had luck reopening a Citi account?

2. Was it a HP or SP?

3. Will you keep account number and most importantly account history if reopened?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Citi DC closed due to inactivity!

I believe there's a timeframe from closure to reinstatement.  That said, it'll be HP if they determine the account can be reinstated.  Well-worth it if this is one of the oldest accounts on profile.  If reinstated, be sure to maintain some periodic activity on it.

Just call them to see what, if any, options are available.

@FinStar Thank you so much! Do you know if the account number will remain the same? Also, if I will keep the account history?

If reinstated, and in most cases, yes and yes.  But, be sure to confirm that with them (or escalate as necessary) so it's not treated as a new account.  They typically read a disclose upon doing this.

Let us know how it turns out.

Sorry to here about the closure, but this topic gets brought up alot.   People that havent used their cards in 2 years, 1 year, 6 months and whatever else.. If you want to keep the card just put a $5 or whatever charge every 5-6 months on it.  I have 30+ cards and manage to do this so others with far less can easily do this as well?  People that care to keep their cards use them otherwise if you don't care let them close by this method.

Re: Citi DC closed due to inactivity!

Just want to thank everyone for their assistance!

@FinStar I noticed today the account was reinstated. I see a tracker for the new card Citi will be shipping. I also see a HP on my EQ via CK. I don't have immediate access to my EX report, so I'll have to check Discover credit scorecard later after I remove my credit freeze. No HP on TU. Now I have to wait a month for the card to report to see if I kept the account history. As of right now, the account reports as "closed due to inactivity" on my credit reports. Will keep you all posted.

I will surely remember to put spend on the card every couple months going forward.

Re: Citi DC closed due to inactivity!

Congrats on getting your account reinstated! I'm sure your history should continue and not report as a brand new CC. If not make sure to follow FinStar's advice and follow up with customer service. And as always make sure to give it a swipe every 4-5 months. Regardless of $ value a swipe is a swipe.

Out of my curiosity, did you call in to request reinstatement or contact them through secure messaging?

@Anonymous Thank you! I called the number on the back of the card to inquire.

Why do they need to send a new card for reinstatement?

And congratulations on getting this taken care of!

Because whenever any account is closed, the expiration date and CVV are typically no longer valid.  So, the reinstatement is basically renewing the card.   It's possible the OP can still use their current plastic until the replacement is activated.
