I've had this card 8 years. Was originally my groceries card, but over the years other cards have exceeded it's benifits. (Capital One's Savor recent increase to 3% on groceries) I also have gotten the AMEX BCP for 6% groceries and Citi's Custom Cash for 5%.
I have a couple cards that have 3% or better on gas, and don't do much travel or spend on home improvement (the other 3% catergories) So currently it's kind of a dead card for me.
I"m not much of a sock drawer person, just wondered if anyone thinks BOA will improve rewards on this card to make it worth keeping.
I'm on the fence to just close, it's not my oldest card, but one of my oldest.. (I'm also not worried about utilization)
Thanks!
You know I read where usually people that have a career, after working they go home and having the major investment is their house. So, what do they do? They invest their time, energy, and money in their home. I would just keep it just in case if you do have to buy stuff from home depot.
Honestly, it's rare to even see 3% on home improvement too. I wish bbva card was still around I love how they have insurance, medical/health, ytlitlies and home improvement. But yeah, just keep the card. Who knows, maybe you will join the boa premier tiger and it will be a better card than your other cards.
B of A has launched a few new cards...one just recently "Unlimited Cash Rewards" and before that, "Customized Cash Rewards" (I think this may be what you're referring to...Custom/Customized). Personally, I always lean towards SD just because the OLD OLD accounts that I have keep my new accounts from causing any/very minimal blips in my scores as my AAoA is over 7 years.
My thoughts on this.....I'm in a similar situation. Although I have the AOD 3% card, I have still used my BoA for 3% Online Shopping just to keep it regularly active between any 0% BT promos that it often offers. (another good reason to hang onto it) And nothing else offers online shopping as a category.
As it is my only BoA card, I want to maintain that relationship with BoA, just in case.....because I personally think that they may eventually have to release some sort of 5% card in order for them to compete with other Prime lenders in the 5% market. (Discover, USBank, Chase, Elan, Amex BCP and now Citi has joined in) And the Customized Cash card would offer a way to PC to any new BoA card that hit the market.
Just food for thought...

Keep the card. Change the 3% category for online shopping and use for online billpay, Amazon.com or other online shopping. Then you can maximize your other cards for the categories you use most at brick and mortar locations.
Personally I would keep it. Don't it have a 3% on online shopping? I would also use that card every 2 to 3 months on Lowe's to get air filters or something. So far only thing I use my Americard is to pay for my instaink subscription ($2.99 a month). I would close it if I can't get it product changed to the Cash Rewards. I hate cards that gives me nothing in return.
The clincher for me is I have platinum honors status with bofa so I'm earning 5.25% return on all the categories. It's probably the best travel card if you re looking for a cashback travel card becuz of all the travel cards this has the widest travel category I've used it for ski lift tickets and stubhub purchases
@Yankee2 I have BoA for online shopping 3% but they also make promotions for balance transfer and direct deposit with 0-2%.
Imo BOA is an awesome bank. Smooth payments and good at reporting, o and limit increases are soft pulls which they are distinctly generous.
I forgot all about online as a category.... (got to give myself a big duh on that one...)
Yep, it's a keeper!
Thanks everyone!
I have this card and have the 3% category set to online shopping, and it's amazing just how many things count. Even a myFICO subscription counts as online shopping! You can also change the 3% category once a month if your spending patterns change throughout the year. I would keep it as you may find a use for it with how versatile it is.
