Closing Card for Inactivity v. Request to Close

Does it make much of a difference? I have an Orchard card that I plan to stop using. I am going to close it but was planning to wait until August. Until then, my plan is to just leave it in my car for those rare days when I forget my wallet.

I did a board search and read a few threads of HSBC closing cards for inactivity and dropping the limit to $5. Is it better to let the CCC drop your card, or for the user to do it? Or does it make no difference?

Current Cards: Banana Republic Visa ($5,300), Chase Freedom ($2,000), Discover It ($11,500), Amex Costco True Earnings ($5,000), Chase Slate ($2,500)

It really won't matter the reason for the closing as far as scoring is concerned but lenders (like HSBC) might look at inactivity in a negative light.
