Does the credit union you applied for offer any type of secured loan? If you open up 3 tradelines, even if its just 2 you will be in a much much better position in a year from now.
the AU account shouldnt be a big deal, i told my GF to just put a 100 dollars (even though she didnt care) limit on it as i just want it to help my credit scores and not for regular usage.
You don't even need to use the card in order for it to report. Once you're added as an AU the entire history of the account will be added to your CR, and anything she does with the card will be reflected. Whether or not you use your AU card makes no difference.

even better! my gf has all her credit cards to autopay in full every month and her credit is already 760+ on all three bureaus! If i can even get a little of her history it'd help a lot!
Credit is so weird. I got a CU card and a citi forward card within a week of my 18th bday. That was 3 years ago though(my bday is at the end of August).
I made two late payments on the citi though and they closed the card and those two payments have hurt. I have 4 cards now but they're cards I recieved last year except for the CU so my AAoA kind of sucks.
Capitalone was the first bank to give me a card since the citi so I'd try with them first. Low limits suck but from what I've seen I think they're trying to get away from that.
