Combining 2 Discover IT cards

I have seen that people have been able to combine 2 Discover cards together to make one card with the credit limits combined.  Is this something they still do? If you are in a 14 month interest free, 12 month cash back match promo, do you lose that if you combine the cards together? I have one card with a $12,000 limit and a second new card with an $8,000 limit.  Would I be able to combine these to make one $20,000 limit card?

Re: Combining 2 Discover IT cards

The most recent rules I know of are:

Both have to be more than a year old.

One has to have a zero balance.

One has to be eligible for CLI.

That said, when the Discover cards hit $20K, a 4506-T request is common shortly after, and even CLD. I would just keep them both and get twice the cashback fun each quarter.

Re: Combining 2 Discover IT cards

@Sbrav77 ,

I combined my two in September to $20,500.  The newer card was less than 12 months old.   I was able to keep the promos on the newer card.  No income verification needed, but YMMV.

Re: Combining 2 Discover IT cards

@NoMoreE46 - I've asked Discover to do this several times and they always tell me I cannot do it. Is there a specific way to ask them to combine my Discover It cards? I've had one since 2017 and one since 2019,

Ditto on what I've heard on the rules.

I'm not familiar with Discover asking for a 4506-T or commonly decreasing credit limits.  My card has grown to $50K over 28 years and that's without any financial documentation requested.  That was also without any account consolidation.  The largest balance was about $14,500 several years ago on a balance transfer offer, and that was about 90-95% utilization of the existing CL.   My $50K limit seems to be my personal cap without heavier spending on the card.  In recent years, it's just gotten light usage from the 5% categories and obviously I don't come close to using $50K.

By the way, I had a bright idea two years ago since I knew they allowed account combination and thought I would ask for a Discover IT MILES card, get a decent approval, and later combine the limits after taking advantage of effectively 3% for one year.  Discover had other ideas and gave me a low $1K toy limit approval, even with me having a $50K card with them. Smiley Frustrated  (See this approval link. )  I knew I could probably grow it but didn't want to put the effort into it and just closed it.  DW applied and even with lower reported scores and income got a $9K approval.  She added me as AU on year one for the card but I've since removed myself.
