Combining CapOne Cards, Increase in Score?

So just a thought, maybe a tiny question, so hypothetically speaking:

Lets say I have 2 Capital One cards.  One has a balance of zero with a credit limit of $3500.  The other has a balance of $30, and the limit is lets say $500.  If Capital One is only allowing you to combine the bigger limit to the smaller $500 card because the $3500 card has no balance, will the $3500 limit card that will be closed still show a positive trade line for the next 10 years AND will the smaller card be considered a "credit increase" on my Fico Credit File, which then in turn will raise my credit score like I got a credit increase?  So then showing a $4000 available limit. Then will Capital One make me wait 6 months again for any kind of auto increase even though I only combined the cards?

I searched and googled, but didn't find anything.  Just a pondering, because I just did it for craps and giggles, and since it is not still a "new" trade line, I keep my shiny spade in my sigy.  Smiley Wink

But back to my question.......am I in for a good or bad surprise?

Your balances and utilization totals don't change so I doubt you'll get any score bump. If anything, if it drops you below 3 cards total, you'll see a score drop. After the other card is closed, it should keep reporting. And cap1 will consider it a CLI, so I you should apply for one, before combining.

Re: Combining CapOne Cards, Increase in Score?

Like the first reply said, this is an interesting question.  Certainly out of the ordinary, lol.  Gun to head, my first instinct is to say no, but I am not certain.

What I am certain of is this.  Before combining my cards, I made sure to get the 6 month increase on each.  Did you mention if you had done so?  That's what I'm comfortable insuring you do.  My guess is that score may hinge more on total credit than individual cards, so I'm not sure if your ploy would yield a lot.  I just would be sure to get the auto increases before the combination.  I'm not sure how far apart your cards are in eligibility for increases though, but that would be a factor for me if combining(mine were pretty close together).  I seem to remember waiting for the increase on each, and then combining immediately after(or very close).

EDIT: the 2nd reply has good food for your consideration as well.  While we're at it, I'm not sure if you mentioned which card is older.  That would also be a consideration, although the "bucket" thing may also come into play(If your credit was substantially higher when applying for the 2nd card).  I figured I'd throw some more considerations into this "hypothetical" to possibly make it even more infotaining.  Smiley Happy

Yes. The first card, the $3500 one, was increased from $2100 in March.  The $500 one, I could have waited till July 24th, and did a 6 month increase on that one, but with me being impatient, I did it like 2 weeks ago ahead of time, because I thought my six months was May 24th, duh what a ditz!  So my only option was to combine them.

They are both Quicksilver One cards, both had the same apr, just the $3500 one was opened on 06/2016 and the $500 one was lik 10/2017, around Halloweenish.  I literally have like 12 store cards, 8 credit cards, 1 personal loan and 1 car note.  Kicking one to the bucket is ok for me.  It's not my oldest, It's my kryptonite Credit One card!  Ugh I can't wait to burn that thing.  Smiley Mad

I guess I'll just keep up on my alerts here on myfico and see if anything happens.....

Re: Combining CapOne Cards, Increase in Score?

Oh Oh!  And one one more monkey with a wrench....

Since Capital One is sticklers with how many "personal" cards you have with them, and the limit I think is 2, if I now have just 1 Quicksilver and 1 GM card. that has a $5000 limit, will I now qualify for one of the other "personal" cards from them like the Savor, or will I have to wait 6 months, because I combined, or may I do it within like 30 days???

I love these forums!

Re: Combining CapOne Cards, Increase in Score?

I had an absence until recently, otherwise I could probably better answer your last question.  I love to help when I can!

And yes, I love these forums too!  I cleared a number of questions off my chest in the last couple of days, and can now wait and see what kind of replies I get. Today alone, I received enough information that already has me thinking a number of moves(apps and PCs) ahead, similar to chess.  Good stuff on here, I'm glad to be back!

Re: Combining CapOne Cards, Increase in Score?

You can have 2 rebuilders (secured, journey, plat, qs1) and 5 prime cards. Co-branded cards don't count. 1 new card every 6 mos. And if I remember correctly, they have a 9/24 rule. Combining doesn't count as an app because you're reallocating to an existing card. It would be counted as a CLI.

Every time a Credit One account is closed, a credit angel gets their wings =)

AHHHHH! I KNOW! I KNOW!  But they got me with a $3800 limit and it has a zero balance.  I am waiting for a better card to come along so I can not only close that card, but also some of the store cards.  But I am so scared because I am looking to get a house next year and I don't wanna mess up my chances.
