OK, I'm trying to combine my brand new $500 Slate and move that over to my $2000 Freedom. They are both visas. Chase is telling me this is not an option, not even if I close the Slate. They just keep saying I have to have at least $500 left on the card I want to move from. What???? Haven't I seen tons of posts of people closing their cards and moving the whole line to another card? Can someone explain to me how this works? Do I have to wait for a statement or something? I just got the Slate in the mail today. I haven't activated/verified receipt yet. Could that be part of it?
I appreciate any help you may have for me!

I closed a Slate card I had w/3500 CL split 3000.00 of CL between Freedom & Sapphire but unfortuantely they did make me leave 500 on the Slate to get closed away..Thought it was dumb,Rep said left to cover any incoming charges, but I knew I didn't have any. It didn't bother me as I just wanted to close un-needed acct, but in your case u don't have anything to leave or move doing it this way...
Yes, I too have heard of folks who were able to move entire CL over, but it didn't work for me...
Hopefully someone who got it done can weigh in how to do it...
Good Luck....
To cover incoming charges? On a closed card? Don't they automatically decline purchase attempts on a closed card? This is so silly. If I wasn't trying so hard to garden, I'd take the HP to try to get a higher limit so I can actually use this Slate. Sigh. Do you think they'd change it to Sapphire? Hmm.

Sapphire has a minimum CL of $5k so you wouldn't be able to convert it.

You may have but there are also many that have to leave $500 on the card. I don't recall the specifics of why but it seems like it had something to do with age and/or activity.

Probably. Not activation but being brand new.

What do scores look like? anny baddies, how many new accts in past yr?
Even without that info the OP has a brand new Slate approved for $500. That indicates that Chase has some concerns about the OP's credit. Limits aren't just randomly assigned or determined solely by the card. They are determined based on what one's credit profile and income qualify for.

I'm not sure another app is a good idea. OP's credit profile doesn't look very strong, else Chase wouldn't have given $500 limit. Also, remember Chase has a 5/24 rule. If you have got more than 5 cards in the last 24 months then a new app with them will result in a straight denial.
OP, have you used the Slate at all? Chase used to have a policy of moving the entire limit out if (a) the balance is $0 and (b) no transaction has happened for the last 30 days. It has been a while for me. But if you satisfy those two criteria then you should send them a secure message saying you satisfy those two criteria and that they should let you merge the full account.
If they still don't budge (which they can if they recently changed their policies), you might have to wait to get a CLI on the card.
Actually, my credit profile is much stronger than it was when Chase gave me a $2000 CL with Freedom in September. And I was expecting a similar limit on the Slate, which was the only reason I applied - was intending to do some balance transfers. When I saw that $500 limit, I knew it would not help me, so I app'd right away, the same day again with Wells Fargo and got instantly approved for $3500. So I don't think my credit is the issue. I think that Chase is being weird! And no, I *just* got it in the mail and have not used it.

Not sure what they meant by that,,seems they auto decline, but whatever,,,Doubtful on just pc to Sapphire as jace8602 stated it has 5K min starting lim,but I guess if you got the CLI on slate up 2 5K then you could,,but why risk the HP for that when you could simply app for CSP outright?

I'd say if reports & scores are around 700+ not a bunch of new accts, then just go for CSP and close Slate as the CSP works great w/ the freedom u already have...
will need more info to make a call on this one....
JM2CW.....
I'm going to wait on the Sapphire. I have a few recent cards, but I'm planning to garden then get a mortgage at the end of the year, then early next year I will get whatever else I need to add to my portfolio. I want CSP, and am also eyeing the Citi Hilton card. My scores are currently EQ 657 TU 680 EX 699. I did my balance transfers to get utilization under 30%, so I should see another bump in a few weeks when they go through. Am continuing to pay them down. Also, I do have four 30 day lates on my report. They are all from the same month May 2014 due to financial hardship, and I'm working hard on trying to GW them away. Fingers crossed! I appreciate any and all advice on this!
