Confused about low initial credit limit.

After reading this forum and utilizing all the great advice, today I received a myFICO alert that my EQ score had gone up 50 points, to 730!  So I couldn't help myself and pulled the trigger on the Amex BCP card. I was instantly aproved , but with a limit of $1,000.

Is there a good chance that when I call on Monday that I might be able to reason with them for a little higher limit? I currently have a 35% utilization and the lowest limit I have is $3,000, with my chase being 7K and Carecredit 9k, so I'm a little curious about such a low limit, even with the 3x trick, I'll only be at 3k.

I just was a little suprised with such a low limit when I've gotten the impression that Amex is a little more loose with credit than Chase.

I also really want to thank you guys for the great advice that has helped me be in this "problem" to begin with.

Re: Confused about low initial credit limit.

it is very very hard for anyone to appeal their initial CLs with Amex. In a way, most people will tell you it is impossible.

Just wait till 61 days after your account is set up and request for 3x CLI. After that, you are eligible for a CLI request again in 3-6 months, depending on whether you were approved or declined for your 1st request.

JPMorgan Palladium (100k), AmEx Platinum (NPSL), AmEx SPG (46k), AmEx BCP (42k), Chase Sapphire Preferred (47k), Citi Prestige (31k), Citi Thank You Preferred (27k), Citi Executive AAdvantage (25k), JPMorgan Ritz-Carlton (21k), Merrill+ (15k), US Bank Cash+ (22.5k), Wells Fargo (12k), Bloomingdale’s (12.4k), Chase Freedom (5k), Discover IT (5k).

You can always ASK for more.. stranger things have happened. Smiley Happy

You may get an auto CLI if you use it to heck and back and have exceptional habits on your other cards, as well.

There is probably little you can do right now but use that card like you have a 100k limit. Smiley Wink

Re: Confused about low initial credit limit.

I would just wait and use the card and PIF until you're eligible for the 61day 3X CLI and possibly a subsequent 3X CLI.

Re: Confused about low initial credit limit.

You indicated your EQ score went up 50 points to 730...  that is phenomenal!

Did Amex pull EQ, or EX? I've usually seen them pull EX.  Your TU, EX, and EQ scores may be similar, but can be different enough to cause this.

I was going to garden... Honest!

+1 AMEX is generous lender. Just give it some time and they'll be nice to you. I've seen 1k limits go to 20k in 2 years

AMEX BCE (30K), DISCOVER IT (29.5K), NFCU CASH REWARDS (25K), BOA TRAVEL REWARDS (15K), USAA VISA (13K), CHASE SAPPHIRE RESERVE (13K), COMMENCE MASTERCARD (7.5K), CHASE FREEDOM (7K), CHASE FREEDOM (7K), TFCU CC (2.5K), TARGET REDCARD (900)

You refer to your EQ score but Amex primarily pulls EX.  You can see the difference in my EX and EQ scores in my siggy, they can be quite different.  Amex typically will nort recon unless you can provide them with evidence that there was an error on the report they pulled.  You might want to look at it this way, 61 day 3x then another 3x in 181 days so you could be sitting at 9K in 8 months.

+2.  AMEX will grow w/ you in no time, give it 61days(which is not long)  and ask for the full 3x CLI.  Perhaps 35% UTIL is a lil' hefty for AMEX granting you more than $1k to start with, pay the balances down to under 30% and ask for the full 3x after 61days, and you should be fine.

Re: Confused about low initial credit limit.

I think AMEX use their own internal score system and mainly really on Scores and Info from EX as reference, AMEX is really nice if you are nice to them. You can always use the 3X from them.

Ok, I will do just that Smiley Happy

The rep even told me to wait 60 days and then call back to get an increase, and gave me the backdoor number.

I know! I was blown back, I couldn't believe it. I went from 50% utilization to 35% and apparently that made all the difference. There where no other factors in my report that are negative besides my balances. They pulled Ex which I only have a FAKO for, but I called and asked about the reason why the credit limit was so low, she really just told me "it's automated, I don't know", but told me my credit score was "perfect"  I'm not sure if that's just her, but when I asked what it was, she said they couldn't tell me for "security reasons".  Seemed weird, but I hope it is included with my card when it arrives.
