Conmenity declines/Target breach

Went to use my Sportsman's Visa and it was declined. Called CS and apparently they cancelled my card because of the Target breach. I don't know how far reaching the cancellations are but I feel for people getting declined six days before Christmas... especially if they don't have another form of payment.

It appears it was a widespread issue so Comenity like any other lender is taking precautions by preventing any compromised accounts from being used.  Sure, it's an inconvenience especially during the heavy holiday shopping season but better safe than sorry.  That's why lots of individuals prefer to have a second form of payment in the event one doesn't go through for whatever reason.  Life happens.

Re: Conmenity declines/Target breach

Discover had a notice when I signed in basically saying they have been notified by Target and watching all clients credit for safety as a result

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Ouch, I feel bad when I watch people's card get decline and they struggle to buy something.

...granted I work at a business oriented hotel, and I've swiped like 7 Centurion cards...but some people really panic when the word says DECLINED. I had 1 Centurion decline on me...and it really was declined.. LOL

So looking at your cards, I have to ask....   Do you work at a hotel near the Red Cedar River?  If so do you ever go to Campbell's smoke shop?  It is a great place to find gifts such as pipes and cigars this time of year.  If you no longer live in EL, then I understand!  Do you like El Ez?  I like to eat there when I am in Michigan, but only once on every trip, well maybe twice.  The topopo salad and the nachos are great!

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.....

that's not good. I just placed an order at VS and my card went through, but it was a very small order with lots of coupons that they sent me. It went through fine. I wonder if it's because it's a store card and not one that I could have possibly used at Target. I hope they aren't going to cancel every one's accounts.

I think they closed it because it was certainly one of the numbers at risk.  I called my bank because my card was used at Target and they told me that Target was trying to identify the real risk still.  Some of the 40M numbers were actually not stolen and they are still trying to figure out which were.  They might have already identified some of them already.  Yours might be on that list.  Sorry if this is really a problem.  I think they should have issued cards to replace the ones that were stolen, but waited until they were received to cancel the other card.  A nice friendly phone call would have been a pleasant way to let you know and get prepared for it.  I for one, am glad for fraud protection.

@Using your VS card @ VS would have nothing to do with the breach (unless you were using a major CC at VS, but by this point it would have been restricted if it was affected by the breach).  This mainly impacted major CCs used at Target including some of their Target CCs

Re: Conmenity declines/Target breach

I had the same issue with PenFed a few years back.  I was on my way out of town for Christmas and tried to buy something on the way but the card was declined.  Only after calling PenFed did I find out someone had tried to spend $600 at a NYC pharmacy.  I would definitely have appreciated a proactive phone call.  To make matters worse they would not expedite me a new card to my destination.  Thankfully I did have a backup credit card.

Re: Conmenity declines/Target breach

After calling CS, I think Benhardtra is right. I shopped at Target twice in the last month so my info was at risk. It was really surprising to have the card declined though and a source of some good natured teasing from my friends.
