Could I have 2 of the same Amex card?

I was recently thinking about my Amex BCP's $6,000 @ 6% limit and an idea popped into my head that is as simple as it probably is stupid and I'd never even considered this before, but... Couldn't I simply apply for a second BCP and just have 2, effectively doubling my $6,000 limit? I'm sure Amex would not be thrilled that I have 2 of the same card and will likely either merge them or deny me a second one outright and even if they do let it pass initially they will take action once they see I am spending more than 6K on groceries between the two cards, but I just thought I'd ask you guys - what are the odds of them approving me for a second BCP? Is it an automatic denial or is it possible, but will raise a lot of red flags? My EQ is 780.

Thanks.

The odds are none. To my knowledge rarely ever will banks give u two of the same cards. U could try blue sky though...

Why not just pay in full twice each month?

To add: if you can register the 2nd card as a business card with the 1st being a personal, you have a shot at it

He's wanting to maximize the 6% back at grocery stores, Amex caps it at 6k a year then it drops to 1%.

Are you married? if so could you have your wife app for the BCP?

Or what about BCE? Granted you'll only be getting 3% back but that's still better than 1! (and aren't they technically different cards? Smiley Tongue)

Last app 5/7/2014

No apps until 3/31/2016!

Re: Could I have 2 of the same Amex card?

Yea I understand it might be for the rewards, but Amex has the caps in place because past a certain point it starts to break even or even starts losing money for them.

If they were okay with 1 person 2 same cards, they would have just made it as "12k limit per person per annum."

Easiest way would be for your wife to apply, or for you to apply as a Business.

Perhaps if you already have a card that's being phased out, you can request a product change to a card of your choosing. Otherwise I don't think there's a way.

Re: Could I have 2 of the same Amex card?

Thanks guys for confirming my suspicion. I'm not married and I don't think it's worth jeopardizing my relationship with Amex to try the business card route (I don't have a business and is a BCP even available for business?)

May be another dumb question, but authorized users don't get their own 6K limit right? It counts toward my own?

Confirmed. However many authorized users there are, it's still one account.
