Usually they report as of the closing date (mine all do), but I have heard that some use a different date. Also, be aware that AMEX reports two months behind for some mysterious reason.
For me, if AMEX don't report right I won't use the card. That's the way how I treat AMEX..I know AMEX always report one month behind..Visa and MC are always reported on time every month...

Whether or not AMEX reports 'right' is in your own mind. Yes, they report one month behind, but for the overwhelming majority of people that is immaterial. Unless you are in the market for credit at a particular moment and want the highest score possible it doesn't matter if AMEX is a month behind or not, it all averages out in the long run. It's an example of worrying about something that a) can't be changed and b) doesn't mean much.
Does the 1 to 2 month lag apply to bank issued amex cards as well?
Just wondering since I paid off my entire balance on my BoA amex, and it was a huge chunk of my utilization.
