Current Experiences with AMEX Assurance Purchase Protection?

I wanted to see if anyone might have had any current experiences with AMEX Purchase Protection or Return Protection.   I recently went thorugh my first experience attempting to file a claim and walked away not very impressed.

I purchased a smart thermostat using my Everyday card that incurred accidental damage when I removed it from my wall to paint my hallway within 30 days of purchase.  I tried to call the manufacturer to see if they would do a repair and was directed to try and return it to the online retailer.   Online retailer only allowed a 14 day return.  My initial though was "Yay! AMEX to the Rescue!".  So I initially tried Return Protection and was denied and recommended to file a Purchase Protection claim as it would fall into that category.  I filed the purchase protection claim and was denied due to 'manufacturer defect, wear and tear".  I'm not sure how damage on my part was wear and tear.

I went ahead and sent a letter asking for re-consideration based on their denial letter and provided a full explanation.   I guess I'll hear back in 30 days.    If they don't reconsider, I'll probably just give up and consider it $120 down the toilet.  I guess I should just purchase the cheap Square Trade warranties going forward.   Maybe AMEX will come back and reconsider .

But, I wanted to ask any AMEX'ers out there - have you had any good experiences using these benfits or is it hit and miss?

Can't speak to purchase protection, but I have used Amex return protection and had no problem.  They didn't even ask for the item back which was a surprise.

Amex is really good typically at covering this type of stuff.. I haven't had to use it but have had a friend for example drop a pair of 400 glasses on a cruise his fault overboard and Amex took care of it with no issues and reimbursed him since he bought them on his Platinum card.  Have heard many good stories on high dollar purchases where people choose to use Amex due to the extra protection.
