It's a commonly-held belief that you are only able to make one payment on your Amex card before your first statement closes, 30 days is the timeframe I see cited in the forums.
I was approved for my Amex ED and Amex PRG on February 10th. I used my PRG to make a few hundred dollars in charges, and on February 23rd (12 days after account opening) I made a payment for $300.
A couple of more weeks go by, and I've added $2,300 more to the account. I wasn't going to try to make an additional payment, since I believed I wouldn't be able to make one before the statement cut. I had a big expense coming up last week, and wanted to make sure the charge wasn't declined (Yes, paranoid on my part, but I didn't want to be embarrassed). On March 9th (27 days after account opening), I attempted a $1,975 payment, fully expecting it to be declined.
The payment went through with no problems. My statement cut today and I only have $1191 due because the big purchase I made Friday night hasn't cleared yet. I don't know how hard and fast the 30 day rule is, but I was able to make two payments on my card before the first statement generated.
That's good! I was approved for the Amex ED card in Feb. as well. Charged $35.00 on it and the system won't even allow me to pay it. It took the payment on March 1st supposedly, but it has not been withdrawn from my bank neither does it reflect a payment on Amex's website. Oh well, no big deal as I was just testing it out. So, I'm under the impression that it varies from person to person.
Good data point here. I've always been under the impression that only one payment can be made with Amex during the first cycle. CS told me this actually in my first month. That was last summer though. Perhaps they've recently changed their policy on this or something? I'm curious to hear if this is a fluke or if others report the ability to make multiple payments.
I was approved for an ED Amex on 2/4/17. I have made a payment every week since I have had it.
I got a really low CL of $500 so I like to just pay my expenses off every week. I didn't know that some people werent allowed to do this until yesterday.

I think there might be an exception for that particular limit already... not being able to make multiple payments on a 500$ card would make it unusable for a few folks.
I wonder if Pooka would know...

More data points - I opened my EDP on 1/12/17. Pymnts made 1/22 and 2/3 with no issues. CL is 19.8k.
I think this might only apply if it's your first AMEX card. I know I wasn't able to make multiple payments when I first got my Delta Platinum, but I've always been able to do it with the rest of my AMEX cards. When I got my last AMEX, the PRG, I've been making multiple payments even before the first statement cut.

PRG and ED were my first Amex cards. So far I've made three payments on the PRG, and two payments on the ED, but both are beyond 30 days now
When I added my subsequent Amex cards I didn't have to re-add my bank account info; the website allowed me to link each new card to my existing payment account.
I can't say if it would have been a problem or not, though, since I only pay once a month, but some of the differences people experience might be attributed to linking a known/existing payment account to a new card, versus adding the bank account from 'scratch'.
