Re: Did I just get shafted by American Express for no reason????

We do need to stay focus on the OP and not turn this into another derailed thread.

Should actually have a savings/cash saved up for emergencies as opposed to (just a) CL. Obviously not everyone is cable of saving up that much right away, but it is always preferable to having cash to just credit available in case of emergencies, or you end up in situations like OP.

Actually, it's ideal to have both. Money in savings isn't always immediately accessible, but credit is. If you charge the large amount, the merchant gets paid immediately. At that point, you can make arrangements to get the money into your payment account and cover the charge sometime between the time it posts and the time it's due.

As others have mentioned, we don't know the whole situation. In an of itself, I don't think 42% utilization since June should have provoked adverse action. Along with that, the recent $650 charge is relatively small. However, a balance of $8,200 requires substantial payments, no matter what the limit is. $800 per month would seem reasonable, as that would knock off the charge and interest within a year.

Like others, I wonder if there's more to this situation. OP, were you carrying a balance on this card before your trip? If so, for how long? What's going on with your other cards?

Hindsight is 20/20, but I think an installment loan would have been a better way to pay for the trip. They're much better suited than credit cards for larger expenses that can't be paid off in a short time. Lenders recognize that, and FICO recognizes that.

OP, I'd take the deal if you can come up with the cash. Pay the $3,920, and get your limit restored.

I think if everyone just stuck with what the OP asked instead of picking apart his or her original post and poking fun at it and then reading how wonderful everyone has it with this and that vacation, savings, checking & and back up accounts and then back up back up accounts, the OP may have answered by now. The OP is like "why bother".

You scared the OP away. I wouldn't answer you either.

It sucks that American Express did this to him.  Nothing he can do about it except not be dependent on them in the future.  They can do this to anyone at any time for no reason at all.

Credit cards companies are bad to deal with. I have been burned by them doing stuff like this to me in the past.  To me now I just take advantage of them by getting sign up bonuses and never using their cards again.  Unless you have 0 percent interest deal and you can definitely pay off before the 0 percent ends I would never carry a balance on a card.  They offer 0 percent deals and sign up bonuses to get you hooked on credit. If you can't pay cash for something don't buy it. If you don't have money for emergencies saved up start saving until you do.   I have money automatically taken out of my check that goes directly to a savings account.  That makes it easier as you never see it in your checking account.  Then if an emergency comes you have the money in hand and you need and aren't ending up paying for something for years.

I also have another savings account for things like vacations.   That way when I take a vacation which is a planned event I don't pull from my  real savings.

A lot easier said than done for a lot of people. It's great to hear how lovely everyone has it with vacation funds and high interest savings accounts. We love to read ourselves talk. Now back to the premise of this thread....

No I was in the posters situation before where my limits were cut way down and I had balances.  I was giving advice about how to not be dependent on credit card companies as there is nothing you can do if they cut your limit and then your utilization is screwed and you can't get new accounts from anyone else and other companies see your limit lowered and your other card maxed out and they cut them as well.  Then they can raise your rates if they want to and you are powerless.  Telling someone to make 800 dollar payments when they don't have 800 dollars seems like people talking to hear themselves talk.  I was giving advice pertinent to his situation.

I think other people criticized the original poster and I certainly have not or don't put any blame on them.  I think when the credit card companies do this it is terrible. Why give you a 10k limit and then cut it down when you put 5k on it. Makes no sense to me.  If you only want someone to charge 3k give them a 3k limit.

Not to be incendiary but you sound like the op has nothing to do with this situation, like it happened out out of the blue.  Imo nothing happens at random and that we are generally the cause of our situations.  We are generally not in control of the outcome of our lives and most of our thoughts during the day are lies to ourselves.  How about them apples lol.  Donny is spot on, the op is gone…either amex will restore the  cl or they won’t.  nobody will know what really happened.  Just like life.

Why make the limit 10k when they only want you to put 2k on the card?  Why make the minimum payment 100 dollars when they want you to pay 1000 dollars on it?

don't know your reference's but the simple answer to most card questions is because its their card and their rules.  we are just using the card.  use the card, pay the card, never be late.  its not very complicated

Look at it this way:

  • I am a borrower of your money.  Do you think I am trustworthy if I borrow money every month to buy $500 worth of groceries but generally pay it off pretty quickly?
  • How about if I borrow $5000 a month from you for an online casino or something like that but take a year to pay it off, or maybe 2 years?
  • What if I also took cash advances out and took forever to pay them back?
