Why march? It showed up in december last year.

Because that would be a few months before my next trip, but will give me six months in the garden. December is a bit too early for me. Jan is the earliest I'd be comfortable with. Smiley Happy

Yeah, but if you applied in december you'd get the $300 airline credit up front and then again in january.

If one values gold status each year with $10,000 annual spend, January would be a much better option.

Upon reaching the 10k spend, you'd achieve gold status for the rest of that year plus the following year. Essentially this is the same as if you earned status the normal way (staying 50 nights). Thus getting the card in January and pushing 10k through by Feb will result in gold status for 2 years. Then to maintain this you would only need to spend 10k every other year.

However the above is only for those who wish to hold the card long-term, and only if one values the gold status each year. For those who are only after the signup bonus, then applying at the end of the year is a better option for the purposes of claiming the $300 airline credit twice within a 12 month period.

It is not so cut and dry.

the terms and conditions state that upon approval you will be granted gold status for one account year. You must spend $10,000 within that account year to maintain gold status for the next account year.  IE: Apply in march 2016, spent 10k by march 2017, gold status good up till march 2018.

On the other hand, it also states gold status earned is good for the rest of the calendar year, up to febuary of the following calendar year. the terms and conditions are entirely contradictory of themself.

Breakdown of how the gold status actually works: As long as you run 10k through the card every 12 months from approval (IE: if you're approved in march you need to spend 10k from march-march) and you do that continually, you will ALWAYS have gold status.

Your gold status doesn't drop in febuary as normal status would with marriott. applying in january 2016 would NOT grant you gold status until january 2018 UNLESS you spent 10,000$ between january 2016 and january 2017. the schedule would go like this

January 2016 - Approved for card, immediate gold status granted - Clock starts on 10k spend

January 2017 - 1 year cardmember anniversary. Gold status will either be renewed (if 10k has been spent in the last 12 months) or will expire on febuary 28th 2017.

Rinse and repeat just changing the years =]

There's no way to get 2 years of gold status without doing anything.

Also, one can ALWAYS claim the $300 airline credit twice within a 12 month period.

No matter what month you apply in, a new year will start sometime within your 12 month period.

Although the terms and conditions state that gold status is granted for one account year, I'm not sure if that's how it really works in practice.

My new account year begins in a couple of weeks, however my gold status is good until the end of Feb 2016. Therefore my 10k annual spend from Sept 2013 - Sept 2014 granted me gold status for 18 months. This is clearly longer than the one calendar year.

Yeah, I know it often works that way but i wouldn't say it's guaranteed to work like that for anyone. the T&Cs relating to the status make no sense, so it's all really weird.

The reason it worked out that way for you is because your status lasted the rest of the current year, and the entire next year, but there's no way of knowing what the "cut off" on that time limit is. If one applies in january, we don't know if they would then get status till jan '18. I wouldn't have anyone risk not spending the 10k if they want to keep their gold status.

Do you think the cutoff dates may be similar to a status challenge? That would explain why Sept granted status for 18 months, whereas a Feb account date would only grant status for 12.

I guess so. lol. Weird. Marriott also has the buy back program which can be either useful, or a terrible value.

Re: Difference in Ritz and Marriott?

I did this year because of the 140k sign up bonus, gold status and the travel credit which we got global entry and such... Next year, unclear with all the folks pointing out terrible returns.

Ooh that reminds me, went to target today for the target Amex and I could only pay the fee with credit card, not load it? I thought you could load $5k a month on it?!

Hm, though I'm not too familiar with the Target Red, once upon a time, I could try to offer an answer.  Now, I'm not sure the violation of TOS.  Is it may mention MS, but can't advocate?  Or, both?  Discretion is the better part of valor, I suppose.

Like in the NFL now, I have no idea what constitutes a "catch."
