Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

I plan to request a Discover CLI every 91 days. Does the current balance on the card at the time of the request have any effect on the CLI granted?

For example, if the current CL is $1000 and the current balance is $800, should I pay down the balance to below 10% utilization before the CLI request?

I'm curious about this too, since I am still waiting to see my first Discover CLI.

Re: Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

after my 7th statement (with low balance) i recieved my first cli from discover of $400 that took me from 800 to 1200. a few days ago i tried after 60 days from first cli and with a balance of  almost $800 i got another cli of 600 that took me to 1800 total cli. not sure if i would have gotten more with a lower balance. just sharing my experince so far.

Re: Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

Keep in mind that when you request a CLI, Discover is going off of the last SP they took on you which could be anywhere from the day of the request to 29 days ago.  Whenever they last updated your FICO score.  At the time that score was generated, the question is what was your utilization looking like and/or did you have a balance and how high was it?  Just take that into consideration.

If your utilization percentage was 80% they would more than likely deny your request I would think if you were closer to the 10% range they would apt to approve depending on you overall credit profile.

Re: Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

My utilization was about 25% for a few months when the account was interest free and I was able to get CLI's. Last month I paid in full because the interest free time was ending and they gave me a 6.5k CLI.

Pay it down. They like large payments

Re: Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

I requested a cli on my Discover with a $600 balance with a limit of 1500. It didn't effect my increase. I probably could have gotten a bigger increase if my balance was lower but who knows

Yup.  That's one of the things with these and most datapoints - there's never a way to go back and answer those "what if" questions as undoubtedly new variables enter the equation any time a change happens.

Re: Discover CLI request: effect of current balance

Some people have reported receiving CLIs while carrying balances from purchases or BTs. Since every credit profile is different, you'll have to submit your request to see if it works for you. If it does, awesome! If it doesn't, no harm done. It's a good thing CLIs are SPs so you can test the theory with no negative impact to your profile. Good luck!
