Discover It Recon?

So I've been kinda wild with this stuff lately

2008: Added on to Mom's Chase United cars as an authorised user

Oct 25 2012: 21st birthday
Oct 27 2012: First CC. BofA Cash Rewards Student Unsecured $800 CL (gr..way too small). Use it for everything. PIF multiple times a month. Utilisation high because the limit's so low. Put at least $5000 towards that card by now.
Jan 7: Mini-app spree before I knew much of anything about credit. CSP (denied), Freedom (denied), Discover It Student (denied) =(. Then I started to learn and it was really stupid in hindsight.
Feb 15 2013: AmEx Gold! NPSL. Been using this for most everything except gas all month and have already made a payment for the hell of it.
March 6 2013: Recon'd the Discover It, but they did a new hard pull and was still denied because of account history.

Wondering if there's a route I can go from here with Discover? Do you guys have advice on what I should do or if I should app for anything else? Long-term, would like to

Close out BofA

Chase Freedom
CSP
Chase Ink (5% Cashback on bills)
Discover It
AmEx PRG

Re: Discover It Recon?

Also have two utility bills (water and electric) in my name. College student with job and about $17k/year. No debt or student loans or anything and my mom pays my rent (holla)

Re: Discover It Recon?

The utility bills don't mean anything. Have you tried asking for a credit limit increase with Bank of America? Six months is decent time and they give large increases. I would say you could wait until the Bank of America card is at least one year old before applying with Discover again.

With not much history and only 17 thousand income, you won't get the Chase Sapphire Preferred. People have said that at minimum Chase likes to see one year of history before approving so in October you could try for the Chase Freedom again. You already have two credit cards so waiting until they show more history is best right now. I don't see a reason to close out Bank of America, unless there is an annual fee.

Whenever you do apply for the Chase Ink, be prepared for a moderately lenghty interview about your business. If you don't have one, you can pretend I guess. They also may not give a business card with such low income either.

Re: Discover It Recon?

I mean the income'll probably (hopefully!) rise once I graduate (full time college junior right now with a part-time job) so I'm really treating that like a temporary issue.
Right now though, the Chase cards are definitely waiting til Oct and the BofA card'll be closed out only once I have all my "grown-up" CC's established. In the meantime though, the Discover thing's really annoying just because I keep hearing everyone getting approved. Plus, it's a college student card and I'm in college so I'm not sure how they can really deny someone and in their own words "well it looks like you're doing everything right, just wait it out a bit" and under Dodd-Frank I couldn't get my first CC til I was 21 anyway. So I'm like 0.o

Re: Discover It Recon?

Garden for awhile and then try again in >6 months. Make sure you miss no payments. I had my Discover More turned into a Discover it last week and I have 0 late payments with Discover and still had to smooze a Account Manager

Re: Discover It Recon?

Lol I heard Ink's for small business but looking on the forums it also appears in a very Tony Soprano like fashion you can make up a "legitimate business"

IMO- stop apping - you have a thin file and the 4 inq's on Exp need to age- assuming Discover pulled EQ/TU

What are your scores? Chase and Discover will decline you because your history is new. Also, Chase tends to match existing CL for 1st time approvals and if you are not happy with your BoA limit then you won't be happy with Chases either.

After you let your account/inq's you might want to consider Citi Forward for Students and perhaps even Cap 1 Journey.

Who do you bank with? As a student there is probably a CU that you can join and I would suggest you look at their cc - after you let your inq/acct age.

Re: Discover It Recon?

I've got a BofA checking, Fidelity Cash Management, Citi checking and NFCU checking/savings
Trying to decide which of those to keep/toss too but that's another topic. Smiley Tongue
Scores when BofA initially pulled were 700-something but that's probably dropped with the Inq's

Re: Discover It Recon?

The Citi Forward was actually my next target. Figure it'd be pretty easy to get and I could PC it into a ThankYou Preferred and would reduce my overall utilisation having 3 CC's open

Re: Discover It Recon?

NFCU is the place I would apply for cc.

I might still wait until the inq's age a bit or possibly a better score.

YMMV.
