Discover It Student Graduation

I was recently approved for the Discover It student cash back card.  I've tried to look around what happens once you graduate from college, but haven't really been able to find a firm answer.  I have seen some people say that once your estimated graduation date occurs, the one you put when applying, they just auto convert the card to a regular card.  I have a hard time believing that because some people end up taking longer to graduate than their expected date, but maybe you have to update it once you know?

I'd also love to know about anyone's experiences with CLI on the student card.  I hear very varied reports on their standard cards, but I know they don't like to give huge limits on the student cards.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

Graduate to what? The only difference with student cards is they start relatively low and grow slower than normal ones. They probably treat it like a normal discover it when you graduate but on your end nothing changes except they might increase you limit by a sizeable amount if you were a good customer.

I have the student one and used it for most expenses, i'm on a 60 day cycle with them, cli's started on the low side and the got a little bigger each time.

When you graduate from school, your card will become the “regular” Discover.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

By graduate, I am referring to college.  I know the card is almost the exact same, but technically speaking the student card and regular card are different.  Mainly the credit limit increases and also the regular card has quite a few more options for card designs.  The main one I am concerned about is credit limit increases, but I do kinda like the gold card design that you can't get on the student version. Smiley Happy

@josh1

You can get all the same designs on the student versions. There are 2 different Student versions: Chrome or It (aka 5% off categories).

The It has more design options. If you want the It version, call them and request the change.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

@JAG73, maybe we are looking at different things, but the regular It Cash Back has 24 options, while the Student It Cash Back only has 9.  Unless there is a loophole around this, but I just think that they give the regular cash back card more options.  Oh, also the It is the one I applied for, not the chrome.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

@josh1 I would either chat or or call them to be sure......my nephew was approved for the student card.

It automatically reverted to the chrome when he was approved. He had limited options on the designs. He changed it to the IT and immediately had every option I have which are 143 design options.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

@JAG73, will do.  And for your nephew, do you mean they just moved him right from the student to the regular?

I looked at all the options for each card (Chrome, It, Chrome Student, and It Student) and it seems as though the standard It offers the most, with the student cards and the regular Chrome not offer much.  I'll include pictures below of the It vs. It Student.

Maybe once I activate my card and register it online I will have more options, but if so that is a weird way about going about it.

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

They moved him to the Student It. Definitely call when you get your card and activate. He had all the options (143 designs).

Re: Discover It Student Graduation

@JAG73, will do.  I kinda wish they offered all the options when applying because I would have gone for gold.  I also was disappointed when I noticed the purple for the student It is different from the regular It.  Honestly, the regular purple looks somewhat cool, but I just don't like the student purple.  Thanks for the advice.
