Discover Promotions

So I received my more card in the mail yesterday and activated but when transfering me to a rep to finish, the activation phone just kind of hanged. I was still connected though. Anyways I signed up for my online account and wanted to make sure my card was activated so I did the chat. She verified it was. Then I remembered something. I had read Discover offers promotions for using their card occasionally.

I asked if I was eligible for a promotion and she said yes. For the next 20 purchases I get $1 back for each of them. :-)

So you get $20 back after 20 purchases?    Do you already have a Chase Freedom card?  You can get $100-$200 back after making purchases totaling $500-$1000.

Re: Discover Promotions

No I don't have a freedom. Figured I would share in case someone else could use the offer.

Re: Discover Promotions

No ask now. From what I read they offer them randomly on accounts. Especially when you haven't used you card heavily lately.

Yeah, I like Discover for those sporadic offers as i don't use my account heavily. I got a little $2 off your grocery purchase of $50 or more coupon in the mail. Needless to say, since this is 5% month for groceries for up to $200, I availed myself of the coupon. I've got another $10 left to spend on groceries this month. After that, I'll use it for some gas during the summer.

In my opinion, Discover have created a difficult situation for themselves as a lot of their customers have learned to play their seasonal 5% game and put the card on the backburner for general purchases.

Re: Discover Promotions

It would be my go to card for general purchases if there were no tiers. If they did a straight 1% back I would use them for all purchases not earning better rewards elsewhere. My citi card offers 1% so purchases not falling in other categories is obviously going on that.

That's a great offer, tsquad131!  Is she going to take that?

@kilpela:  I'd use that for McD's or coffee or something small, every day, to max the % benefits.  A buck is a buck, no matter what.  Smiley Happy

About Discover in general, that $3000 tier (paying 0.25%  'til you get there) only costs $22.50 in potential rewards...a year!  That's easily made up on the 5% categories, and their customer service is outstanding.

$22.50 is something most folks don't think twice about, unless it's on these boards.

Of course, I do make a great cup of coffee...at home.  I do not do Starbucks.  But if anyone here does do Starbucks, $22.50 gets you what...3 visits?

Just sayin', and no offense to anyone, but I like Discover.

Thanks for the tip, Kilpela Smiley Happy

I just called Discover to ask if I were eligible for this promotion.  The first gentleman I spoke with transferred me to an Arizona CSR, and she gave me this promo effective immediately.  She also welcomed me to call back in regularly to find out about additional promotions, as they offer them regularly.

Discover is fantastic - you can really rack up the savings with this card.  For example, I received $80 worth of Shell gas cards a couple of days ago ($40 cashback netted $80 in gas cards, 50% savings), I am currently receiving a promotional 1.9% APR for 6 months (I requested this a couple of months ago, for furniture purchases), and I'm awaiting receipt of a Pier 1 Imports partner gift card ($40 cashback netted $50 gift card, that's 20% off - I'll be combining this with an in-store Pier 1 coupon for 10% a purchase of $50 or more).
