I read somewhere online that you need to activate the 5% categories. I was wondering if

1) is that true?
2) Do you have to do it before quarter starts ?

Was thinking about converting my chrome but if that's the case, I'd need to do it and have it process before a quarter starts

It is true that you need to activate the 5% category, but you can activate it at any time during the quarter. You will just not earn the 5% until it's activated.

Yes, it's true that you need to activate the 5% category, but it's extremely simple and can be done through online or through the app. If someone doesn't want to take 30 seconds to sign up for 5% cash back, that's plain insanity, especially if it's in their first year with the cash back match. 

No, I received 5% back on restaurants and movie theaters until June 30 when I had my rewards program changed over to the regular It card on June 11 (so I was still able to sign up).

Don't overlook Discover's site as a resource.  You do have to activate each quarter.  IIRC you only earn 5% after activating.  You can activate well before a given quarter begins.  Which reminds me that I need to activate for the 4th quarter...
