Background:
Life has it struggles which for me came in 2014. I had a couple Cap1 CC accounts that were charged off at that time. However, I maintained on time payments with USAA (2400 CL) and Discover (4800 CL) accounts throughout the rough times though each account held a high balance 75-80 percent most of the time.
My FICO did take a beating though. Late 2018 I was able to begin clearing off bad debts and charge off accounts along with paying down balances on USAA and Discover.
Discover did not balance chase me but in March 2019 after I had paid them 29.99 interest over several years as well as having paid down the balance to zero closed my account.
This left a bad taste for Discover but I understand they are just managing risks given my overall credit picture was poor even with keeping my account positive with them.
Fast forward to 2020, as my scores climbed above 670, I would check prequalify from time to time but always receive the decline for reasons of STATUS OF EXISTING / PRIOR DISCOVER CARD ACCOUNT.
Fast forward some more and I have broken past 740 on all CRAs.
This week I received (2) prescreen offers for Discover IT in the mail, basically the same offer just in different colored envelopes. 0% APR for enrollment period then offer of 11-15% APR ongoing. I took this as a sign that maybe I was out of the doghouse.
But on checking prequalify page, I again receive the decline for the same reason recited above. So I have to assume that if I were to APP using the prescreen code I would be declined for the same reason even though they have sent me an offer.
I don't need the card and I still have a bit of a bitter taste given how they closed account on me in my history.
What does the membership think?
I guess their "prescreen" process does not filter out prior card holders like me?
Right, sounds like marketing to me. Classic case of left hand not knowing what right hand is doing.
