Re: Discover secured reward change question

I've called and chatted 2x this month. Was told it's reviewed monthly.

Was told I'm welcome to close and reapply.

Guess I'll wait until 24 mo Mark so it shows as a mature account on reports

Re: Discover secured reward change question

HMMMM.... they usually don't say close and reapply.  I had to do something like that to upgrade my Sam's card to MC from store card but, that's Synchrony just being a PITA.  Discover might need a nudge from the higher ups though to get some movement here.  Sounds like the frontline reps aren't cutting it here.

Maybe one of these numbers will get you somewhere?

Discover: 888-676-3695 (Recon)
Discover: 866-219-0214 (Retention Dept.)

Otherwise yeah, if it doesn't convert on 24 mo's it's probably a good idea to reapply.  Since the only caveat on 2 cards is wait at least a year I would probably apply before closing it out.

Re: Discover secured reward change question

I would apply for a regular card with those scores and then cancel your secured to get your money back. That's insane with a 790 FICO and 20 months history with them.

Re: Discover secured reward change question

Just curious, what are your other cards?

I'd have thrown that thing in the sock drawer long ago in this situation. In fact, my Discover secured just went in the sock drawer at 3 months, which doesn't make a ton of sense since I'm still in the Cashback Match year (I have been milking that $200 limit, but it's still kind of a pain to do when I don't have to now).

In your case, where your Cashback Match year is long gone and they still won't graduate you, I think I'd forget about Discover and move on to the one of the many cards with better rewards that definitely would love to have your business.

BTW, the wasted Cashback Match year is a rarely thought of, but pretty serious downside to the Discover secured card.

Re: Discover secured reward change question

I've had mine 19 months now so I feel you.

My negatives came off 8 months ago. Chat and calling hasn't worked for me as well. I use it monthly.

To be honest with your scores that high, I assume you have some good cards and limits and discover probably knows that. They tend to not enjoy competitng with lenders for customers with good profiles. They are like Barclay in that sense, except discover doesn't slash and burn the credit limits once they are given out.

Re: Discover secured reward change question

I'm thinking about cancelling my Discover Secured...I've had for 18 months and still haven't graduated.  I sent a message inquiring about it and this was the generic response I got...

Thank you for your message regarding your Discover credit card account. I understand how important it is to know how your account is evaluated and I am happy to assist you today!

We are automatically reviewing your credit card account monthly to see if we can return your security deposit while you continue to enjoy your card benefits. These reviews are based on responsible credit management across all of your credit cards and loans.

I appreciate your business and the opportunity to be of service. Thank you for choosing Discover!

Sincerely,

Brittanie

Needless to say, I regret getting this secured account.  It's $200 CL, I thought about adding more, but I'm really not sure I want to.....ugh..

I've been very responsible with all of my accounts, never late.  Score has gone way up since I started rebuilding 18 months ago.

Re: Discover secured reward change question

I think you have to cancel the secured first before you re-apply.. But im not 100% sure.. think they have something similar to Amex did with their Oasis cards....

If your score is really up that high, a real fico score and your reports are clean id take the inqs... you could try closing the card and seeing if you end up in retentions (correction.. someone just posted the retention number, just call them direct) .... but if not..  just close it ..  If the CSR really suggested reapplying.. they might have saw the updated scores.. Disco's CSRs are nice but pretty powerless...

(Remember that CreditAddict had problems applying for his own card, even the secured Disco, due to having a Joint Card.... )

Id try the numbers listed by another member (not the standard ones) and then just cancel it outright.

UPDATE:

I think mine unsecured finally.  My old secured line was 2,000.  This morning it is 4,750.

I was about to call and cancel it last night.  LOL

There seems to be a lot of graduations going around the past few weeks...

Esp this week...

I wonder if Discover is going back and cleaning up a backlog or such...

Congrats...

In a few days, id still go back and click the CLI button... give it some time to finish..

Yeah they may decline but im guessing theres some left on the table because it was an autocli.... (soft pull so no pain, more gain)
