Do I need a store card in the mix?

Hey guys/girls I just wanted to ask a real quick question. Yesterday I received my brand new Visa Platinum CC from my credit union with a CL of $3000 Although, I am extremely excited about the card (so excited that I used it to by me a sausage biscuit from McD's this morning) this is the ONLY cc that I have. The other types of credit I have are student ($40,000) and car loans (16,000) (never been late on either). My question is: Do you think that that I should add another regular cc, store card or both in the mix? I am in Atlanta GA and don't really know who pulls what cr for what card in Georgia! That info would be helpful. My equifax Fico is 576 and I am desperately trying to get it to at least 625 by December 08. My FAKO with Transunion is 648 and 642 with Exp.

I would love ANY input you all can provide...thanks! Smiley Very Happy

Congrats on your first credit card!

Most people have reported getting a nice boost from each their first three revolving accounts (like credit cards and store cards), so a couple more might be a good idea.

As far as whether you should get a store card or another bank card, store cards DO help with credit mix, but it really only makes sense to get one that you will use and enjoy, and that offers rewards or discounts you can use somewhere you shop frequently.

Where do you spend a lot of money anyway?  Target?  Macy's?  Best Buy?

Thanks for the information. I love Target, GAP, Old Navy, Best Buy, Kohls and TJ Maxx. What do you think? Is my Equ too low to get any of these? I have never pulled my real Transunion or Exp report, so I don't really know what they are.

Thanks!!!! Smiley Happy

Well, among those, Target is definitely the easiest to get, although you will start with a $200 CL and may be stuck there for a while.  Or you may be upgraded fairly quickly.  They're impossible to figure out.

Kohl's is issued by Chase, and is fairly difficult to get, as far as store cards go.  I wouldn't try for that one just yet.

Best Buy is not too hard to get and they give fairly large CLs usually, but the card is issued by HSBC, who are not the easiest company in the world to deal with, for a number of reasons.

Gap and Old Navy are issued by GEMB, and I know next to nothing about these cards.

Re: Do I need a store card in the mix?

I received an Old Navy card when my credit scores were still pretty sad (mid 500's).  I had decent income at the time (around 45k) and derogs less than a year old.  My biggest complaint is how they (GEMB) handle their CLIs.  They want to see 4 statements at your current line before they'll consider a CLI.  This does NOT humor me at all, since the ON card is a PIF and therefore I rarely see a statement.

Another warning about the Best Buy card is the fact that HSBC hates to issue too much credit to one person.  My point?  Pick your HSBC cards carefully.

Good Luck!

If you have a cc, Macy's is the way to go. Enter your account info on-line, which should give yo an "automatic" $100 approval. Once approved, call their CS number and seek same day increase. You can do the same with Bloomingdales.

Out of curiosity, what credit union are you using? I'm in Georgia also.
