I have 15 now, I don't think I want more than 20.
Also some existing starter, non growing cards taking up slots would be closed to make room for better cards. Like I don't have a Chase card yet! Gotta get the trifecta eventually. Dont own a home yet and def need a home improvement card etc etc.
I dont have a crazy high income so would be satisfied with a limit of $5000 on each minimum.
Have 19 now, no limit moving forward. New cards have to be of benefit to me with spending though Im not adverse to grabbing one with a huge SUB just for that reason. I also have no qualms about closing cards once they become useless to me. I dont have a total CL goal and it floats, today its close to 175K
I'm a MF'r through and through. Past the point of is this too many lol. Hard to get approvals nowadays due to debt and income but won't ever stop me from trying. If I ever could go debt free for sure I'd trim to a select few but until then I only need to score one approval for every 10 tries and that's good enough for me
Like some others here, I don't have a hard limit on # of cards, but it's sort of limited by the criteria for getting a new card. Outside of SUB, it has to offer a significant benefit over existing cards (e.g. a higher rate on a reasonable amount of spending) and as the number of cards grow, the "gaps" become smaller.
And, if the 15% back on everything no caps no fees card came out, I would happily use just that and let other cards close from non-use.
If you had asked me even 3 years ago, I'd likely have thought that having 18 cards was absurd, but ....
Having 18 is useful. Situations arise where 4 to 6 cards will report a balance in a given month. My FICO 8 score won't take a hit because I have 18 (1 in 3 or fewer reporting).
They all serve a purpose -- or they did. Some are handy because they are (or have been) reliable low-rate balance transfer vehicles. At least 10 of the 18 see valid organic use in a given month.
Still, there are a couple that no longer serve a purpose other than keeping my aggregate util that much lower, keeping my AAoA higher, and allowing more cards to safely report a balance in a given month.
And I'm certainly not averse to acquiring a new card to defer payment on a large purchase, especially if it offers a SUB.
Bottom line: I'll get or keep any card that works for me.
Edited to add:
For example, Lowe's, Home Depot, and Target would all make sense, when I can afford the INQs (say, late 2023).
EQ | 8?? | 0 INQ | 7y4m |
EX | 840 | 4 INQ (2 CC, 2 auto) | 7y |
TU | 8?? | 1 INQ (CC) | 6y8m |
3/24 | 1/12 | AoYA 10m | AoOA 24y2m | ~1% |
I've had more, but I've simplified and I'm down to 7 cards which includes a Target RedCard (they refuse to move it to a MC for reasons I cannot identify lol). One of the cards is SD'd with only one charge on it monthly, but I am holding on to it until I use the rewards on it.
Frankly I can't see having more than 10 cards again moving forward. For me, it's just too much hassle when it comes to paying bills, keeping track of spend, and the like. I am sure I am losing out on optimizing earnings but I can live with that for the added simplicity and lower stress/workload.
As far as criteria, I've had limits lowered by my request. I feel like $10k on cards I don't frequently use is sufficient, while I like $20-25k on cards that regularly see heavy use. Household income isn't high, so it's uncommon for me to run more than ~$6-7k through one card in any given month. If our income or monthly spend were higher, I'd definitely push for higher limits.
Re: Do you a have a limit for how many cards and total credit limit you want?
No real hard limit on number of cards, however I did get too many and figured out that I preferred a smaller set Have been closing two cards a year for a couple now. Currently at 7 with one leaving Oct-Nov and another next May-June. Will try 5 for a while. Three I use and two in sock drawer for age.
It depends on where, how much, and if simplicity or higher rewards is more important from your point of view. (no correct answer). It also can change with what is happening in your everyday world. The cards I wanted 10 years ago are quite different than my current set.
Have no interest in getting a certain overall CL.
I like enough of a CL on each card to cover max monthly top spend.
If not for knowing how utilization and age play such an important part of scoring, I would only have 3 cards.
I have 20. It's way too many. I want less but I want more too. I imagine I am not alone in this contradictory state of existence.
I try to add cards that benefit my spend but I do go for the bonuses from time to time. It's hard to pass up free cash.
I stopped counting.
10 cards are my min and max. My lowest CL is 10k, highest 38k. I am 5.2k away from a TCL of 200k so my 10 cards will average 20k. After that I am done. No more cli.
edit: change
9 cards are my min and max. My lowest CL is 10k and highest 37k. My TCL is 199k so my 9 cards average 22k. I'm fine with this. No more cli.
