I was reading that Discover allows you to take cash back at grocery stores when checking out without a cash advance fee and I see my grocery store is on the list but when I tried to take $20, it asked me for my PIN. Is that normal? I don't want to do it if I'm going to get a fee but I could use this every once in awhile as there are places I go that don't take cards and I don't want to pay an ATM fee either.
It is called Cash Back at Grocery stories. https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/member-benefits/cash-over-purchases.html
As far as I have seen it with Kroger and Meijer the Discover Credit Card will ask if you want any cashback, assuming that the merchant doesn't have a limit and/or used all the limit in a matter of hours. With it I haven't seen it asking for a pin number to be asked ... it is possible that the card terminal may have read your Discover card wrong.
Was the card you using credit, yeah???
Yeah it was my Discover credit card. I was checking out, tapped my card, it asked me I wanted cash back, I chose $20, and it asked for a PIN. I set one up the other night but thinking about it now, it just didn't seem right. This was a Kroger family store that's on the list on the website.
I don't think so. I've gotten cashback before and I didn't even know they have PINs for Disco.

Sounds like the card terminal or store may have gotten confused about what type of card it is when it was being used.
Thanks for the info everyone. I will just have to try again some time.
I assume you don't earn cash back on this cash withdrawal?

The benefit doesn't give cash back. When it does post it will list the original purchase of $X and will include the cash back of $X.
But that Cash Back is on the standard APR not the CA APR.

It's not unheard of ... Just the other day I did Samsung Pay with my Chase Unlimited @ Kroger and the system mistook it for a Food Bank EBT card.
Just as a DP, at Winn-Dixie a pin is required, and it's not an option at self-service checkout.
