The woman at Macy's was pushing pretty hard a week ago to get my daughter to open one. I know it is just their job to ask but I just get tired of them asking all of the time anyway. No....I don't want their cards! LOL
Just venting....
I don't think I've been asked if I want to open a card by a clerk in over a year....so I can't say I get annoyed by it.
I certainly don't blame the cashier, he or she is just trying to make a living and doing what they're forced by the company to do if they want to keep their jobs.
I do, however, blame the companies, for pitting the cashiers against the customers that way. The store employees should be there to help customers, not harm them, and we should not have to be on our guard against them. Store cards usually do people more harm than good.... getting people in credit trouble, charging high rates of interest, getting vulnerable people to spend more than they should, causing excess inquiries, etc.
IMHO having a brochure at the counter, the cover of which promotes the benefits of getting the store's card, is more than enough information. The cashier should not have to say anything about it, unless the customer initiates the conversation.
@Anonymous wrote:I actually enjoy it when Sam's workers ask me if I'd like to apply for the Sam's MC.
I always say, "No, thank you, I have applied and was denied (true). So, today, I'm going to use a different card that offers (depending on the day) 2 times or 5 times the amount of cash back as that Sam's Mastercard. Thank you for asking though"
And? While that might make you feel good, I doubt if the clerks think "Wow, we better get corporate to up their game and offer more rewards", they just go on to ask the next customer.
When I was younger and worked at Target, it was my job to stand at the door and hand out Target swag in exchange for credit card apps.. I think I have no room to get upset now

Well are you upset at yourself?
@Anonymous wrote:It's OK to get annoyed by this question constantly and that this annoyance prompted the OP to start this thread. The OP even said that they know it is the employee's job to ask. That doesn't make it any less annoying though. I feel bad for the uninformed 18 or 19 year olds that don't know any better and just hear "save 10% today" or whatever and pull the trigger on the app without even realizing what they are doing.
THIS is really my point in posting this really. My DD is 22 and did not need or want the cards being pushed. And as I indicated, Macy's was really being pushy about her applying even with me standing there too. We were try to be polite and just say "No Thank you" but that wasn't sufficient in this situation. Thankfully, I have taught my daughter about credit and I know she would have said No even if I had not been standing there. I think all of those "Fill out a survey about your shopping expereinces" on my receipts are now going to be filled out addressing my displeasure in pushing store cards which will then be received by someone who actually can share it with marketing decisionmakers.
I posted this thread for a little light hearted humor and venting. But I am surprised it is still going.
For those of you who have worked or currently work in retail and have had to ask for CC applications or other upsell techniques, I know you are only doing your job. Retail is a hard job and I don't want you thinking I was angry with the clerks or would be rude to someone just because they asked me to apply for a CC.
Yes, but I also hated running a register at 16 and being pushed to ask people that. I remember people losing their jobs for not getting one person to apply for a credit card. It's all about sales. Being pushy is all about the pressure. I can't feel too bad though..if someone says no end the sales pitch already.
I had a woman around Christmas ask me at Target.. she knows I'm a regular there so she mumbled "nobody wants them but they make us ask". Yep, no problem, I know.
I started avoiding a certain Whole Foods and a mall because they always had tables out and people sampling things trying to push their products. They get right in your face too. Headphones used to deter people from talking to me but nope still talking and making sure I see them and their products. At least in Target they finally opened self checkout lanes here. Then I have to feel like I am being gakwed at to make sure I don't steal and then some of the people just look like creeps using it as an excuse to stare at your ass.

It doesn't bother me. When I'm asked, I just say, "10% back on this one purchase is just not enough for me to open a credit card." It's almost as if they agree with me because I get a smile or chuckle, and a "have a nice day" when I'm handed my purchase.
lol. I think it's 5% at Target and I hardly spend $20 there at a time. I'd probably get more money back looking for coins in the parking lot.

No way! I still have a crazy recognition letter and award for getting 53 apps in one shift lmao.
